Lacy Home Said
A Total Loss
Central Point The large
two-story residence of the
Don Lacy family at 43 Amy
st. was described by firemen
as "practically a total loss"
following an early morning
fire on Sunday.
The blaze appeared to have
originated in a closet under
a' stairway, possibly from
spontaneous combustion, ac
cording to firemen, who esti
mated that 75 per cent of the
interior was gutted.
The Lacy's were forced to
escape from an upstairs win
dow because the stairway was
blocked. Lacy reportedly
made his way to the ground
by way of a large shrub and
got a table' to stand on. Mrs.
Lacy handed the youngsters
out the window and then was
helped to the ground, herself,
it was said. Lacy then entered
the house and telephoned the
alarm about 3:10 a.m.
Flames were coming through
the roof when firemen ar
rived. Fire spread through the
upper story and considerable
smoke and water damage oc
curred throughout the struc
ture. Firemen indicated that
the family managed to sal
vage little of its possessions.
Three trucks were dis
patched to the scene and 22
volunteer firemen fought the
blaze.

Central Point Grange
The busy fruit and grain
season was probably the cause
of the light attendance at Fri

Agricultural chairman Ar

since the last meeting. Alfalfa
seed is up in price, he added.
The pear harvest is at its peak
with some disappointments in
quality, according to a report

Hiker Rescued
From High Ledge
Yosemite, Calif. (UPD A
young hiker was rescued to
day after being stranded over
night on a ledge high above
Yosemite valley near Glacier
Point.
National park rangers de
scended the sheer wall below
the point, scene of the park's
famed firefall at nights, to
get near the hiker, Bill Beegh
ley, 17, Long Beach, Calif. It
was a daring feat accom
plished by a quintet of rang
ers using ropes.
The rescue party dropped
a rope about 150 feet to
Beeghley, who tied it around
himself and was hauled up
irom the tiny ledge. He had
hiked to the point Tuesday
with a group of other youths
but became stranded -when
he attempted a short cut alone
on the return trip.
After being . hauled to the
ledge, the rescue party began
the perilous ascent back to
the point. More, rope was
dropped to the party because
the rangers were forced to
"burn their bridges" while
making the descent without
sufficient line.
Beeghley was trapped about
1,500 feet above the valley
floor. Rangers said he was in
good condition despite his ordeal.
Man Finds Side of
House Painted
Salem (UPD When Wen
dell Willmarth, business man
ager of the Statesman-Journal
here, went home from work
there was something different
about the looks of his house.
One side had a fresh coat of
green paint.
A commercial painter had
gone to work on the wron&4
house and should have been
painting a place four doors
away. Even his estimate had
been based erroneously on the
Willmarth house.
Willmarth now is debating
whether to have the green
wall recovered with white
paint or to have the painter
go ahead and finish the green
paint job.
