No Cause for Alarm
That Leaves Turn Brown
There is no great cause for
alarm over the fact that the
leaves in many of the oak
trees throughout the valley
are turning brown. County
Extension Agent Cliff Cordy
reported yesterday.
He said the extension office
has received many calls from
concerned residents of the
area questioning the cause
and cure of the change.
The browning results from
Infection by a fungus disease,
Cordy explained. "We have
always had a touch of it in the
valley," he continued, "but
the warm, humid weather we
had earlier in the year caused
a larger spread than usual this
year."

Cordy did warn, however,
that if a tree is de-foliated
early and then leafs out again
with the fungus, the disease
could be very weakening.
Owners should allow the
stricken trees to remain as dry
as possible this summer, he
added.
"It is to be expected that by
next year the situation will
have returned to normal with
mild cases scattered through
the valley," Cordy concluded.

Every so often I see a pati
ent with some nervous disease
of hereditary origin, or I
see two young

families who

they should
not marry, or

minded or blind child who
want to know what their
chances are of having a nor
mal child if they try again.
Often, in sach cases, I wish
that the couple knew much
more about their family his
tory on the two sides. It
would help so much in form
ing an opinion if they knew
more about those "blackouts"
or "fainting snells" that
of the grandmothers used to
have. Were they really epilep
tic attacks or were they or
dinary fainting spells?
Or what were those two
"nervous breakdowns" that
one of the aunts .had? Were
they definite depressions? Or
what was the real story back
of the strange death of an
uncle? Was it a suicide, as
his friends maintained, or was
it an accident as the family
preferred to call it? Was the
man badly depressed before
he shot himself? It is un
fortunate that so commonly
Larceny Charges
Heard in Court
Several persons appeared
before Judge James Main in
district court Monday after
noon including three men
charged with petty larceny.
Thomas Kneeland, no ad
dress given, waived privilege
of having an attorney and
pleaded guilty to the charge.
His case was continued until
Aug 29 for sentencing. Bail
was set at $500.
In a second petty larceny
case Gary Lee Thorp and
Carl Gilbert Dusenbury, no
addresses given,- waived attor
neys and also pleaded guilty.
Each was fined $25 plus costs
and sentenced to six months
in jail suspended on condi
tion the fine be paid.
In a third case Edward
Harriman Holliday,. Klamath
Falls, pleaded innocent to a
charge of driving a motor
vehicle while under the in
fluence of intoxicating liquor.
Trial was set for Nov. 19 and
Holliday was released on $500
bail.
Judge Main also ordered
Leonard Claude Bowen, also
known as C. Lindsay Wilde,
held to answer to charges of
obtaining money by false pre
tense. Bail was set at $1500.

Warns Against Fog
Chicago (UPD The Chicago
Motor club warns that driv
ers should be especially alert
for low spots along highways
which may be beset by fog.
These foggy spots can sudden
ly appear and cause drivers
to lose their sense of direc
tion. In thick fog, driving lights
when your lights are placed
on dim are more effective
than bright lights.
But if possible, most safety
organizations warn motorists
to postpone trips in foggy
weather or, if already driving,
to pull off the road during
a heavy fog and wait for it
to lift.

sult is that when a grandchild
goes to a physician with a
curious story of many short
jittery spells each day, the
doctor does not even think of
the possibility that the child
has epilepsy, and thus the cor
rect diagnosis is missed.
Publishes Book
A hundred years ago Sir
Francis Galton, the founder
of the science of "Human Ge
netics, feeling the great need
for better family records, pub
lished a couple of books that
could be used by heads of
families for the preservation
of information about the
health of their immediate an
cestors. Unfortunately, Galton
was so far ahead of his time
that I am sure little was done
with the books that he got
out. I have in my library
as curiosities copies of them,
Recently, I called attention
in this column to record books
that have been gotten out of
this country, largely for the
purpose of keeping records of
the illnesses of the several
children in a family. How of
ten, when a young man is ex
posed to mumps does he wish
he knew whether he had ever
had the disease! It might make
a tremendous difference in his
future life if he didn't have
them; mumps after childhood
can have some disastrous" re
sults. Now, Charles E. Tuttle,
the eminent book - dealer in
Rutland, Vt., has re-published
a family record book which
was brought out originally by
William H. Whitmore in 1885.
I feel I should keep em
phasizing my conviction that
the most important facts that
people can put into a family
record are those in regard to
the character, temperament
and mental health of their
known ancestors and near rel
atives, which must include
uncles and aunts, nephews
and nieces and cousins. It is
of but slight interest to me to
know that my father's grand
mother was named Barbara;
it interests me to know that
she was well and strong in her
eighties and it interests me
even more to know that she
was a woman of such great
character and wisdom that
people came to her from miles
around to get her advice about
their problems. It interests me
much, also, to know, that the
scientific and mechanical and
inventive interests that crop
up here and there in my fami
ly showed up in an uncle of
my father who, over a hun
dred years ago, was banding
birds, and making watches
for the fun of it.
So often in American when
a physician wants very much
to know something about the
family nervous inheritance,
the patient says, "I know
nothing about my grandpar
ents and uncles and aunts be
cause they were all left be
hind in Europe." Matters are
so much better in the Scan

church and township records
sometimes are available for
the last several hundred
years.
