Cronin, born May 4, 1910,
at Pendleton, Ore., died Tues
day at Beverly Hills Doctor's
hospital of complications of a
liver and kidney ailment.
Cronin- had been sports edi
tor of the Los Angeles Daily
News for nearly 20 years
when the paper went out of
business in 1954. He took his
column to the Times.
He joined the News after
one year at the University of
Southern California, where
he had come to go to school
on a track scholarship. He
was a football, basketball and
track athlete at Pendleton
High school.
Cronin was married in Cor
vallis, Ore., in 1937. He leaves
his widow, Harriet; son Jerry,
16, and mother, Mrs. Jerry
Cronin, of Pendleton.

Rocket May Have
Blown in Ocean

A rocket explosion that U.S.
scientists had hoped would
put an American-made satel
lite into orbit around the
moon may have gone off
under the waters of the Atlan
tic ocean Tuesday night.
The rocket was the ' final
phase of the ill-fated moon
rocket fired from its Cape Ca
naveral launching site Sunday
morning.
If all had gone as planned
with the moonshot package,
the payload portion would
have reached the moon Tues
day night between midnight
and 1 a.m., e.d.t., and the
braking charge, a 3,000-pound
reverse thrust rocket, would
have been used to slow the
unit and throw it into orbit
around the moon. ,
This retro-rocket was to
have been triggered at the
proper moment from Hilo,
Hawaii. But the Air Force had
rigged -the unit to fire auto
matically if the signal from
earth failed to reach it.
The Air Force has released
no information on the fate of
the two stages that plunged
into the Atlantic Sunday atfer
the first-stage Thor Dallistic
missile blew up at the end of
77 seconds' flight. But if the
retro-rocket had not been re
covered from the ocean floor,
and if water or damage had
not upset the automatic firing
sequence, the rocket brake
presumably, would . have ex
ploded on schedule Tuesday
night. .
Jenkins Posts Bail
On Six Charges

(Slim) Jenkins, 36, posted
bail Tuesday on six misde
meanor indictments charging
him with fraud in obtaining
unemployment benefits.
The indictments charge
Jenkins with misrepresenting
himself to the State Unem
ployment Compensation- Com
mission and receiving six
checks while employed as an
advertising salesman for a
small political newspaper.
Jenkins also has beep in
dicted on extortion charges.

he has completed his teach
ing staff for the coming year.
Howard Walton, a recent
graduate of Southern Oregon
college, has been hired to fill
the vacancy created by Don
Brown. Walton is married
and has two children. Origi
nally from Santa Ana, Calif.,
they have been residents of
Gold Hill for the past two
years while he was complet
ing his education. This will
be his first teaching post.
Other newcomers to the
Ivy High teaching staff and
also on their first, teaching
jobs are:
Crystal P r i n e, Brigham
Young university, who will
teach girls' physical educa
tion and general science. She
comes from Prineville, which
was named for her family.
Bob Kellenback, Oregon
State college, new math
teacher, is married, with two
children, and is a graduate
from Grants Pass High
school.
Walter Eichler, graduate
of Oregon State college this
spring, has been on the job
as vo-ag teacher since the
first of July. Eichler is mar
ried and has four children.
Russel Dougherty, son of
Mrs. Ruth Dougherty -of
Caves highway, was seriously
injured in an accident while
employed by the Klamath
Cedar company in Brookings
and is now in Josephine
County hospital suffering
from a broken pelvis and
ribs.

Women Firemen
Douse Home Fires
Reminderville, Ohio (UPD
While the men are away, the
women of Reminderville (pop
201) don't keep the home fires
burning. They put them out.
This is one of the few towns
in America which has women
on its volunteer fire depart
ment. About 15 women, aged
25 to 50, were recruited to
"man" the firehouse while the
men of the village are away
at work. The gals take regu
lar training from Chief Willy
Delgade. When the town's 20
men volunteers are on duty,
the girls .take over phones,
sound alarms, and handle
crowds at fires.
Almost 90 per cent of all
forest fires are man-made.

Stocks Score Rise
With Volume Higher

with volume higher, especial
ly in the low-priced shares.
Gains ranged to nearly 2
points in the main list and to
5 points in the specials. Metals
generally moved up with the
London metal market's rise.
Oils strengthened on another
rise in the oil allowable in
Texas.
Chemicals, drugs, sugar,
shipbuilders, packing shares,
steels, motors, and mercan
tiles stood out among the bet
ter performances.
American Telephone de
clared the regular quarterly
dividend of $2.25 and this
disappointed many who had
been looking for something
better. The stock, which
touched a high of 1833s, up
5,8, declined to a small net
loss.

Thursday evening, a regis
trar will be on duty in the
lobby of the Esquire theater,
before the 8 p.m. nominating
convention called to name a
candidate for district judge.

vention point out that anyone
voting at the convention must
be registered, and if not al
ready, may become so prior
to the opening of the conven
tion. Also, the, Republican and
Democratic central commit
tees are cooperating to pro
vide a voters registrar at the
Kiwanis County fair Thursday
through Sunday at the Med
ford armory.
The Kiwanis club has pro
vided space in the Armory
lobby, and the Democrats and
Republicans will alternate
days in providing the registry
