KVlen's Suits Reflect Departure From Informality of Post-VJar
Men's suits for fall are def
initely dressier, according to
the American Institute of
Men's and Boys' Wear.
The new styles reflect a
complete departure from the
mode of the post-war period
when casualness and infor
mality in suits were practical
ly a rule. The "casual look"
is now largely confined to
leisure hours, while suits take
on a more businesslike ap
pearance. The new fall suits display a
great deal of eye-appeal in
both fabrics and models.
Men who prefer the modern
models combining the best of
the Enelish tradition with
Continental detailing and thei
American ease of fit, will find
such suits tailored of fabrics
embodying a new elegance.
Intricately subtle weaves of
fine wool-worsteds, blends of
silk and worsted, slightly iri
descent effects of worsteds
blended with mohair andor
silk yarns, and jacquarded
patterns all in medium to
dark shades of grey, brown,
or blue, point to a modern
dressier look.
Fabrics Have Variety
Devotees of the natural
shoulder or "Ivy" type of
clothing will find a greater se
lection of fabrics in their fa
vorite models, too. These in
clude subtly colored mill-finished
worsteds in neat tradi
tional patterns; tough, long
wearing sharkskins, new hop
sacking fabrics and, of course,
the perennial flannels in both
plains and stripes.
Stripes, incidentally will be
more popular than ever this
year in all types of clothing.
There will be pin stripes,
pencil stripes, cluster stripes,
ombre stripes and even some
"wriggly" stripes in the jac-quard-type
cloths. '
While "Ivy" models in suits'
show few changes, there is an
increasing acceptance among
the "non-Ivy" dressers for the
"American Ambassador" mod-
ei. This is a trim suit with
flattering lines that will
seemingly take inches off a
man's waistline while adding
inches to his height.
Among its distinguishing
characteristics are a close fit
ting collar, slender lapels
with only a tiny notch, and
slightly tailored but not broad
shoulders.
The "Ambassador's" three
buttons are set a bit lower
and closer together than usual
and its general effect is pleas
ing and new looking.
The newest fabric category
is winter-weight wash-and-wear,
which has hit the peak
of popularity for warm weath
erwear and is now being
adapted for the cold months.
These suits are of the ."auto
matic wash-wear" type put
them through the entire wash
cycle, then toss them into the
dryer, and they come out
pressed and ready to wear.
Topcoats Are Shorter
Topcoats for this fall will
be considerably shorter. New
dressy models, in the manner
of the "American Ambassa
dor" suit will share " favor
with the new "split-raglan,"
the big shaped balmacaan, the
semi-fitted chesterfield and
the roomy box coat. Fabrics
will be lighter in weight, but
very warm.
Hats will be lightweight,
smaller in overall size. The
newest model, the "Centre
dent," features a center
creased shape and a front
pinch. ;
In dress shirts, smaller
shaped, neater-appearing col
lar styles will coordinate with
the slim, trim look of men's
clothes. Bold prints and bulky
look sweater shirts will be
prominent on the casual scene.

with more colorful and bolder

designs and in prhiu

European Influences
Seen in Leather Shoes
From tapered square toe to
lightweight, soft flexible
leather sole, the new leather
shoes carry out the slim sub
tle line of men's apparel so
apparent this fall, even to the
smooth dark-toned leather
linings.
Lasts are generally narrow
er and more subtly tapered;
patterns are more refined;
custom stitching adorns other
wise smooth unbroken ex
panses of leather; leather
welts are narrow but no less
rugged. k
The Continental or so-called
Italian look has become ail
American. Store windows
abound with hand-sewn moc
casins with square toe in
smooth and textured leathers.
The same European influ
ence is reflected in traditional
types such as wing tips, plain
toes, straight tips, and mocca
sin fronts.
Fewer Eyelets
Generally, there are fewer
eyelets, with three and four
eyelet ties most popular. You
will find stitching from the
most intricate handwork to
simple machine stitches on
most of the new fall styles.
Slip-ons have moved from the
casual category to dress and
business wear. You'll see them
in all styles from the classic
unadorned plain toe to the
perforated wing-tip. Many in
both smooth and brushed
leathers have details such as
straps and buckles, or crossed
straps.
Leathers vary from the
high polished smooth leathers
in brown or black to rugged
brushed leathers in tones
ranging from cinnamon to
green. Grained leathers show
up in both dress and casual
shoes, with finer grains more
predominant in the former
and accented grains in the cas
ual footgear.
The big switch-over is to
brown, after several seasons
where most shoes were black,
