Is Collector's Item
The zip-gun has evidently
been minor collector's item
for some time now, even
though I have only recently
become aware of it.
As I examined one of the
deadly pistols produced by
juvenile delinquents for gang
warfare, the owner told me
how he had acquired it.
He had bought the .32 cali
bre, single-shot, rubber-band
operated weapon from a set
tlement worker who had per
suaded the maker to abandon
his budding career of crime.
"And every cent of the S25
I paid for it," he said, "will
go to continue the good work
of the organization."
After I had congratulated
him on the altristic aspects
of his purchase, he went on to
explain his collector's in
terest. The manufacture of zip
guns, it appears, is nothing
new on the American scene.
Only the publicity is com
paratively new. Actually, it
is merely part of the "do-it-yourself"
movement which is
as old as the country and
evidently has an astonishing
number of followers in the
gun field.
As evidence, the collector
showed me a cabinet of 23
handguns, each of which had

The hunting and fishing
pictures put out by Currier &
Ives are among the most
beautiful and most valuable
of the famous firm's prints,
and so when I came across
one of them in an obscure
corner of a friend's house my
curiosity wa instantly
aroused.
1 Was he unaware that he
had such a treasure? Such
thinks do happen. I asked
him.
No. He knew its value. It
was worth about $300, and
the reason he had it there was
that he didn't want to see it,
but on the other hand he
couldn't bear to sell it and
take a $300 loss.
The picture was titled
"Morning In The Woods." It
measured about 15 by 20
Inches, was dated 1852, and it
showed a typical autumn
morning hunting scene with
men and dogs going through
the woods.
He had bought the print in
mistake for another by the
umt artist, F. F. Palmer, and

many people who collect
Class, and other things, with
out being aware that they are
collectors. In general such
people are those who buy
imply because of an object's
appeal. '
An example is that of the
wife of an acquaintance of
mind who decided that glass
of a deep shade of amethyst
was the kind best suited to
both her psyche and her din
ing room. The shape or de
sign was decidedly secondary.
Color was the thing, and in
the year since I had visited
them she had acquired an
astonishing amount of the
dark-hued glass.
Much of it was of designs
and makes I didn't recognize,
but both the tray, from which
he served us drinks, and the
water pitcher I knew instant
ly. They were of what is
known as the diamond quilt
ed pattern. It was a very com
mon one in the ,1880's when
vast quantities of it were pro
duced. It consists of nothing

as a water snake, about four
feet long. The school could
not account for its presence.

viduals at home or at a shop
where they worked during
spare time. While some of
them were as crude as the
zip-gun, most of them were
much superior and a few
were genuine examples of the
gunmaker's art. All of them
worked.
One, which had been made
by an auto mechanic in his
basement, was a four-shot re
volver, chambered for .410
ammo and using either ball or
shot. The barrel length was
only six inches, but its effect
iveness up to 25 yards would
leave nothing to be desired in
a .45.
The piece had cost the col
lector $65. He had bought it
from a police department, the
proceeds going to the widows
and orphans fund.
When I still expressed sur
prise that there should be
enough of these home-made
weapons to justify collecting
them, the owner showed me a
30.06 rifle. It had been made
in Afghanistan by native
workmen.
"When Afghans can make
guns like this with their
crude tools," he said, "it
would be extraordinary if our
highly mechanized, 'do- it -
yourself people couldn't do
at least as well."

It was titled "Partridge
Shooting."
For some reason no one
apparently knows why to
day the firm decided the
picture shtfuld be done over,
and the "Morning In The
Woods" item was quickly put
on the market.
"I knew the story," my
friend said sadly, "and I knew
that 'Partridge Shooting' has
had a value of $1,000 for
some time. Unfortunately I
had forgotten that 'Morning
In The Woods' was not the
original, and in my greed to
get a $1,000 value for only
$600 I didn't take the time to
check."
Incidentally, there are two
Currier & Ives prints with
the title "Morning In The
Woods," and each of them is
listed as worth around $300.
There are also other cases
in which, substantially the
same print has been reissued
by the firm one or more times
and with marked variations
in the value.

that and a tiny line across the
diamond there is nothing
more to the pattern.
Usually it is found in clear
glass, but it is also known in
several colors, amethyst be

She had acquired both the
pitcher and the tray for $10
from a secondhand store deal
er who, she said, apparently
felt he had taken advantage
of her since she didn't try to
haggle. She hadn't tried to

When I explained that $35
would not be a bad price for
the tray and that the pitcher
usually sold for $40 or $50,
she was not particularly im
pressed. "Yes," she said, "I think I
would have paid that much
if that had been their price."

To Refute Charge

fute an Arizona charge that
California wastes 1,500.000
acre feet of Colorado river
water a year.
The charge formed an im
portant part of Arizona's re
buttal case in the Colorado
river water suit. Arizona
claimed that much of the Col
orado water used by Cali
fornia ended up in the Salton
Sea.
California's first rebuttal
witness yesterday was Milton
Fireman, soil specialist of the
University of California at
Daivs.
Fireman testified that the
river carries 1.42 tons of dis
solved solids per acre foot at
Imperial dam. His testimony
conflicted with that given
earlier in the trial by John
R. Erickson, an engineer from
Santa Fe, N.M., who said the
river c irried 1.09 tons.
Says Exhibit Lies
"The figures in Mr. Erick-
son's exhibit lie," Fireman
said. "They . cannot be
proved."
The issue is important in
that the more salts carried
onto irrigated land the more
water is needed to wash them
away.
Arizona claimed California
uses too much water in leach
ing the land in the Imperial
Irrigation District.
Much of the trial day was
spent in introducing Cali
fornia exhibits to be used in
attacking the U.S. Govern
ment's claims that 26 Indian
reservations are entitled to
1,518,295 annual acre feet of
water.
Arizona filed the suit in
1952 to establish title to
roughly 3,800.000 acre feet of
the water. If the claim is
upheld, California would lose
about one million feet from
the 5,363,000 acre feet that
state now uses.
