Many suffers from Parkin
son's disease are now wonder
ing if they should ask for the
operation
which is per
formed on the
brain. At a re-
cent confer
ence in New
York, Dr. Irv
ing S. Cooper,
who devised
the operation,
said that he
has now per
formed it on over 700 per
sons.
The patients most likely to
be benefited are the younger
ones, and those whose chief
symptoms are tremor and
rigidity of muscles, also those
who have the trouble only
on one side, and those who
have not degenerated mental
ly. Sometimes Dr. Cooper op
erates first on one side and
later on the other side. There
is not much sense in operating
on persons who have been
greatly slowed-up and much
aged by their disease; the op
eration will not make a man
young again; it is designed to
help only the fremor and
stiffness.
Other surgeons who have
been using the operation also
reported that the ideal candi
date should have the disease
only one one side, and be
under 60 years of age. Dr.
Robert S. Schwab, of Har
vard, stressed the point that
only 40 per cent of patients
with Parkinson's disease in a
severe form are suitable sub
jects for the operation. When
the patient is young enough
and mentally normal enough,
the operation gives him per
haps three chances in four
of being helped.
HOPE FOR EPILEPTIC
From the National Institute
of Neurological Diseases and
Blindness, in Bethesda, Md.,
comes a report from Dr.
Pearce Bailey, who says that
about 40 per cent of epileptics
have a diseased area in a cer
tain part of the side of the
brain, and from this the fit
producing discharge comes.
Surgical removal of the area
can bring relief in 85 per cent
of these cases.
How happy Hippocrates,
the Father of Medicine, wuld
be if he could only hear -his
report! Some 420 years before
Christ, he protested against
the then current idea that
epilepsy was a special "sacred
disease" for which doctors
could do nothing. People
thought that the seizures were
due to the desire of an angry
god to strike the poor boy
down.
As Hippocrates said, "There
is no sacred disease; tne ins j
are not due to tne anger oi
any god; epilepsy is like any
other disease due to some
thing that has gone wrong
with some part of the body.
It can be hereditary in ori
gin: ' Today, we see so cieariy
that Hippocrates was right.
If only all people knew this,
the stigma now attached to
epilepsy would soon die out
and disappear.
I imagine many persons
soon will be writing xo asn
how an epileptic can know
if he has the type of trouble
that can be operated on. The
best way would be to go to
an expert neurologist, and to
have electroencephalograms
recorded from the several
parts of the brain.
Electroencephalograms are
records of the tiny electric
currents that are constantly
being formed in the brain. In
normal persons the records

I recently read that in
Michigan, during the summer,
a big truck is going around
through the state, carrying
the apparatus and technicians
to work it. This makes it pos
sible for many poor people
in isolated communities to
have electroencephalograms
made. I do hope that this won
derful provision will soon be
made available in all states.
Portland Man Shot
By Ex-Girl Friend
Portland (UPD Thirty-seven-year-old
James Porter
was in serious condition to
day in Emanuel hospital after
being shot four times by a
former girl friend in her
apartment in Portland Thurs
day.
The woman, Eldira Marie
Davis, 26, was taken to po
lice headquarters for ques
tioning but was not im
mediately arrested.
Miss Davis told police she
found Porter in her apart
ment shortly after 10 a.m.
Thursday and an argument
ensued in which she fired sev
eral times with a .25 caliber
automatic pistol.
Porter staggered out the
door and across the street
where Mrs. Sarah L. Richey
called police.
Police said Porter had six
bullet holes in him, four of
them probably entry wounds
and two "where bullets
emerged.
