Backstairs: Ike's Farm Looks Nice

The crops on President
Eisenhower's Gettysburg, Pa.,
farm look fine. In fact, .the
corn is so tall that it inter
feres with newsmen covering
his arrivals by helicopter.
Last week, the descending
whirly-bird disappeared be
hind the waving corn and
newsmen missed the actual
landing. ,
Some newsmen moyed up a
dirt road to a field along a
fence enclosing the Presi
dent's farm house. They had
a clear view of the main
house and lawn, but Secret
Service agents soon chased
them away. Although fenced, more efficient use of its limit-
off from the President's house,
the field also is his property.
The President considers the
farm to be part of his person
al life. Newsmen have been
permitted inside the gates
only on a few occasions
when the President's activi
ties strictly are of an official
nature. The visit by Viscount
Montgomery, the British field
marshal, is one example.
Newsmen covering the Pres
ident regularly may get a
compensating break in Wash
ington, however.

Although more headline
stories come out of the White
House Press Room than from
any other in the capital, its
facilities are among the poor
est. It has only seven type
writers and nine desks. And
the desks are cluttered with
telephones and the cameras
and other equipment of news
photographers.
The press room, crowded on
routine days, is packed with
milling newsmen when there
are big news breaks at the
White House.

tary James C. Hagerty is con
sidering a request of regular
White House reporters for
putting small booths in the
press room and assigning them
to individual reporters in an
effort to make more orderly
and more efficient use of the

His usual golfing outfit con
sists of brown or tan slacks
a solid-colored knit shirt, or
perhaps one of broadcloth
with a subdued pattern, and
a small straw or billed cap
bearing the insignia of one of
his clubs.
Dick Flohr, the Secret Serv
ice agent who chauffehrs both
the President's limousine and
electric golf cart, blossomed
out at the Gettysburg course
last week end in a splash of
color that more than made up
for the President's subdued
outfit.
Flohr wore watermelon red
slacks and an extra wide
brimmed straw hat with
large, bright colored band.
Although Flohr has been
on .hand, the President at re
cent rounds at Gettysburg has
been doing most of his golf
cart chauffering himself.
Inmates Swindle
Funds in Tax Scheme
Folsom. Calif. (UPD Six
Folsom State Prison inmates
have swindled the U.S. gov
ernment out of 51,600 in a
clever tax scheme, Warden
Robert Heinze disclosed to
day.
The convicts obtained a
supply of employer withhold
ing statements, and filled in
the name of fictitious employ
ers.
Then they reported taxes
withheld in varying amounts
up to $300.
The-. felons mailed the
forged forms along with their
regular income tax returns
for 1957 to the Internal Rev
enue Service, explaining they
paid the taxes early in the
year before being sent to
prison.
They asked for refunds of
the amounts withheld be
cause their incomes had been
cut short by imprisonment.
The IRS then sent " them
their checks. They amounted
to about $300 each.
State and federal author
ities were cooperating in an
investigation to learn ii any
other prisoners claimed false
refunds.
Trujillo to Get
Honors Upon Return

lo Jr. be received with the
honors due a president of the
country when he returns
home,
Young Trujillo, who was
denied a diploma by the U.S.
Army's Command and Gen
eral Staff college this year,
is on his way home from tne
United States by yacht. ' .
Trujillo is a son of the man
who has been the dominant
figure in Dominican politics
for a quarter of a century,
and a nephew of Hector B.
Trujillo, who is now president.
Dominican delegates to the
UN boycotted President Eis
enhower's appearance there
Wednesday in token of their
government's resentment at
the U. S. staff college's- re
fusal to give young Trujillo
a diploma.

ly" today at St. John's hos
pital where he was detained
with an undetermined ailment.
The comic; whose intellect
ual approach to humor has
made a hit in night clubs,
entered the hospital after he
was stricken Tuesday night
at 20th Century Fox studios.

ECZEMA IN THE EARS
Some people want to know
why they have an itchy ear
canal, perhaps with a little
moisture in it.
They wonder
if this condi
tion will cause
them to get
deaf. I much
doubt if it
could ever
cause them to
get deaf. Such
i n flammation
in the extern
al ear canal is
often relieved by an ointment
containing a' little oxide of
mercury. A tube of this can
be found in drugstores.
It would be well, first, to
have a physician look in to
make sure that the canal is
not filled with wax. I'll never
forget when I was a young
general practioner, seeing a
sweet old rancher who
batched with a dozen dogs,
several of which slept on his
bed. He came "with what he
thought was an inflammation
in his external ear canal on
one side. When I looked in,
what I found was a tick
which he had probably gotten
off of one of his dogs. When
got the tick out, that was
the end of his "eczema."
Addison's Disease
A woman asks about Addi
son s disease. This is a very
rare condition due to the de
struction of a part of the
adrenal glands. These are lo
cated on top of the kidney's
in the loins. In the old days,
people with Addison's disease
developed a dark skin; they
became thin and very weak,
and after a while, died. To
day, they can be kept alive
usually for years. All a few
need do is to get enough
sodium chloride, or common
table salt, into them, while
others need drugs of the corti
sone type, rney have to be
particularly careful when they
go into a crisis of vomiting,
or when they have an acute
infection, or when they have

If I had such a rare disease,
I'd like to go to a huge
clinic. Why? Because only
there would I find men who
were constantly seeing pa
tients with my trouble. If a
patient with Addison's disease
were to come (to me for treat
ment, I wouldn't take him;
I'd confess frankly that I do
not see a case in 10 years, and
hence must get what little I
know about the disease from
books.
A few doctors don't ap
prove of big clinics, but such
clinics are wonderful when it
comes to the diagnosing and
treating of the very rare dis
eases. Only a man in a great
clinic or hospital can special
ize so narrowly that in , 20
years he can see dozens or
scores or hundreds of patients
with some very unusual com
plaint, such as Addison's dis-ease.--
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation.or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.
