Baghdad pigeon fanciers have
considerable evidence to sup
port their claim that the Bagh
dad pigeons are the best in the
world.
I learned -'this the other af
ternoon, after watching some
pigeons flock toward the rose
colored tower of a mosque as
if they were answering a
muezzin's call.

Mrs. Gladys Presley, 42, mo
ther of singer Elvis Presley,
died of an apparent heart at
tack today only a short while
after reporting she felt "so
much better."
Presley, on a seven - day
emergency, furlough granted
when his mother's liver ail
ment grew more serious earl
ier this week, was reported
almost overcome with grief.
Mrs. Presley's husband,
Vernon, was at her bedside
in a local hospital when she
died. Elvis, who was asleep at
his SlflOOOn suhiirhan man-
sion "Graceland," arrived af
the hospital shortly after his
mother's doctor had . pro
nounced her dead. .
The singer, now an Army
private stationed at Ft. Hood,
Tex., was deeply attached to
his mother. Friends said that
much of his devotion probab
ly was a result of his twin
brother's death at birth.
The elder Presley said he
was asleep on a cot in his
wife s room when he was
awakened about 3 a.m. by her
suffering for breath." He
called her doctor, but she was
dead by the time he arrived.
The body was taken to a e-
cal funeral home. Arrange
ments for services had not
been announced.
The doctor said he looked
in on Mrs. Presley about 11:30
p.m. Wednesday and found
her apparently improved and
"feeling so much better." She
was sleeping soundly after the
physician left, her husband
said.
In achieving fame and
wealth as an entertainer, El
vis made good a promise made
to his mother when the father
was working' as a Mississippi
sharecropper and later when
Elvis was driving a truck
When he - was inducted
earlier this year, the singer
first stated reaction was: '
hate to leave my mother."

they selected Baghdad pigeons
as the most suitable of the
homing variety. It was a wise
choice. The Baghdad pigeons;
responded so satisfactorily to
training in carrying military
messages that the armed
forces of other powers began
to buy them, also.
Widespread Us
Consequently, by the time
radio displaced pigeons' as
message carriers, those of
Baghdad were In such wide
spread use that their release
to civil life easily accounts
for whatever birds one may
una elsewhere around the
world with the same superior
qualities as the Baghdad
breed.

tities of pigeons we used to
have in North America, citing
tne well authenticated case of
a single flock of carrier pig
eons seen In 1808 and number
ing in excess of 2 billion birds.
The Iraqi pigeon expert
nodded. He knew of the now
extinct carrier, and it was a
outstanding example of how
we had wasted our natural re.
sources. In the Middle East,
he was happy to Say, they
managed things differently. :
As evidence, he produced a
photograph of an area near
the Iranian border: A promi
nent feature was a round tow
er that looked like a fortifi
cation but was a pigeon tow
er, instead.
It was used to imprison the
birds, which were very well
fed, until the tower became
too crowded to hold more. At
that point, 'a number of the
older birds were removed and
slaughtered for food.
But the meat of the pigeons
was only a by-product. The
principal purpose of the tow
er was as a means of gather
ing pigeon guano which is
found to be highly successful
as a fertilizer for local crops.
