Take a dav or two or three
(whatever you can manage
land head for the Long Beach
jPeninsula. Located on the
southwestern tip. of Washing
ton, this stretch of beach long
has been famous among clam
tafficionados as an outstanding
,'hunting ground of the delect
jable razor clam. But there is
ianother, usually overlooked,
hunting preserve here that
should appeal to the latent in
terior 'decorator in most wom
ena humdinger of a spot
that draws driftwood and fre
quently glass floats as picnics
attract yellowjackets!
The peninsula is about a
three-hour drive from Portland
and there is a choice of routes.
We recommend the Oregon
drive to Astoria Sunset High
way for speed, Columbia River
for scenery then across the
mouth of the Columbia by ferry
to Megler. It's just a few short
miles around Baker's Bay to
the Long Beach Peninsula.
But when time is an import
ant factor, you may find it ad
visable to cross the Interstate
Bridge to Vancouver and drive
down the Washington side of
the Columbia River. Popularity
of the Megler ferry ride, par
ticularly on Sunday evening re
turn trips from the peninsula,
sometimes makes for quite a
wait for boat space.
Once on the peninsula, there
are a number of reasonably
priced accommodations in the
various communities. If you
want to make advance reserva
tions you can get the names,
rates and descriptions from
the Portland Chamber of Com
merce information center, the
Driftwood collectors can find plenty of material along

Jetty Collects Driftwood
From here the long, thin arm
of the North Jetty reaches out
into the Pacific and with the
aid of tides and the Columbia
River current collects about
its base magnificent heaps of
enarled. twisted, sea and sun-
silvered logs and roots, small
and mammoth.
Here is the hunting, limited
only by imagination, to delight
the artist, the collector, the
decorator and the bargain
hunter. (These polished, grace
ful, sometimes ludicrous, crea
tions of nature bring fantastic
prices even in cities on the
coast.) Just wait till Aunt
Agnes shows her bridge club
back in Kansas the piece of
driftwood or glass ball she
discovered HERSELF!
While there have been
ghastly crimes committed in
the name of0drutwooa decor,
there is frequent handsome evi
dence of its versatility. To the
artist and to most the piece
is beauty in itself, complete.
Its popularity in flower ar
rangements can be seen a t
any show.
As a single point of interest!
on a brick fireplace wall, fop
example,' it can be striking.
There is sharp divergence
among driftwood collectors as
to its ultimate use.
To the utilitarian type, the
stuff is worthless if it can't be
transformed into a lamp base
or coffee table pedestal.
The other camp maintain!
that while there is an occas
sional creation of merit along
these lines, on the whole sucr
desecration is on a par with
Venus statuettes with a clock
in the stomach! This latter
camp has equally strong feel
ings on the subject of painting,
lacquering, varnishing or any
other means of defacing the na
tural gray-silver sheen.
The temptation to pile ths
car high with driftwood ob
jects d'art is a powerful one.
And the problem of what to do
with it all, once home, is some
times a knotty one.
But just remember the fun
is in the finding and if that
gorgeous, twisted chunk turns
out to be too big for the pot
you had in mind, don't worry,
it makes a wonderful fire!
Stormy Weather Reported From Texas Northward

Winds up to 47 miles per
hour drove sheets of rain over
Southeastern Texas, late
Wednesday, causing at least
one death.
Heavy rain pounded the
Atlantic Coast and thunder
showers in Minnesota were
accompanied by hail up to
1M inches in diameter. Show
ers also were reported over
large areas of the Rockies
from Idaho to Arizona.
The Miani, Fla., Weather
Bureau said today that tropi
cal storm Becky, roaring into
the Caribbean in a west-northwest
direction, is expected to
miss Puerto, Rico and the
Virgin Islands.
The storm is also expected
to miss the Florida coast by
several hundred miles.
Upsets Boats
The Texas storm swept out
of the Gulf of Mexico, lash
ing Galveston Bay to a white
froth, and pounded up the
Houston ship channel upset
ting boats.
Winds of 47 miles per hour
hit Houston, blowing down
power lines and tree limbs
and killing a railroad section
hand when one of the falling
limbs struck him.
The Coast Guard rescued
10 persons from Redfish reef,
12 miles from Galveston, and
picked up the two-man crew
of a shrimp boat forced
aground by the storm. The
crew of a tug which capsized
was rescued by another tug
nearby.
Swine Specialists Isolate For Tests
University of Nebraska
swine specialists have broken
the chains of disease trans
mittal in their "isolation
booth"-type of program.
Their goal, as told in the
August issue of the National
Hog Farmer, is to establish a
disease-free stock on as many
as 15 Nebraska farms by next
spring, and re-populate the
swine herd at the North
Platte experiment station.
The pigs are taken surgi
cally from the sows and rais
ed in sterile surroundings to
keep them free of their two
worst enemies, atrophic rhini
tis and virus pneumonia.
After a month . of isolation
arid breathing purified air,
the pigs go to the steam
cleaned, disinfected research
center. But they are never
permitted contact with pigs
farrowed normally. On the
farms, all hogs must be re
moved and quarters thorough
ly fumigated before the disease-free
pigs are placed.
There were reports of a
three-foot tidal wave washing
over fish camps. Galveston re
ported! 3.44 inches of rain. In
land, Ft. Worth reported hail
quarter of an inch in diameter
followed by heavy rain while
Dallas reported the hottest

Siafe Fertilizer Sales Run Behind
Salem Fertilizer sales in
Oregon during the first six
months of 1958 are running
slightly behind the record
breaking 1957 figures. Lime
sales are up.
J. D. Patterson, state chem
ist, said on June 30 this year
132,511 tons of fertilizer had
been sold in the state. At the
same time in 1957 138,926
tons had been sold. These
figures include both simples
and mixes.
Figures taken from inspec
tion fee reports made to the
department also show sales of
agricultural limes increased
about 10,000 tons over last
year's June 30 total. Six-
months sales in 1958 were
27,700 tons.
A smaller quantity of agri
cultural minerals includ'
ing soil sulfur, borax and
gypsum was sold in 1958.
This year 11,233 tons were
sold by June 30; last year the
figure was 13,091 tons.
