Boston Triumphs
Over Yanks 9-6
By United Press International
Gene Stephens and Frank
Malzone hit successive fifth
inning homers to spark the
Boston Red Sox to a 9-6 vic
tory over the New York Yan
kees Saturday before a crowd
of 67,916 that turned out for
the Yankees' annual "Old
Timers" Day celebration.
The Red Sox made it their
day on feoth counts because
their 1946 American league
champions, although fat and
fortyish, also beat the 1947
Yankee world champions who
turned out to be just a little
bit fatter and "fortyisher."
Stephens, filling in for side
lined Ted Williams, connect
ed for a two-run homer and
Frank Malzone also homered
In a rally that produced four
runs. Dave Sisler, whose fa
ther, Hall of Famer George
Sisler was seeing him pitch
for the first time in the ma
jors, received credit for the
victory although he needed
late-inning relief help from
Leo Kiely and Murray Wall.
Mickey Mantle hit his 31st
homer of the year and drove
in a total of four runs to lead
the Yankee attack.
Sherman Lollar drove in
six runs with a grand slam
homer and two singles as the
Chicago White Sox crushed
the Detroit Tigers, 9-3. Dick

Detroit may be switching
to small cars but the Yankees
are sticking to their same old
model Ford to get them to
the World Series.
Whitey Ford doesn't have
white walls or power steer
ing. He does, however, have
seven shutouts and 14 victor
ies and if you think the Yanks
would give him up in a trade
ine yu simply don't know
your market, mister.
Ford's seventh shutout was
a three-hit 2-0 victory over
the Red Sox Friday night. It
put him one away from the
club record of eight shutouts
set by Russ Ford in 1910 and
six away from the American
league record of 13 in a single
season set by the late Jack
Coombs.
