Charles Wharton, former
Medford resident, has been
selected as an official dele
gate to the Geneva, Switzer
land, Atoms for Peace Con
ference, according to word re
ceived here.
He will be technical ad
visor on plasma diagnostics to
the United Nations OIC com
mittee, and will present a re
search paper before the con
ference Sept. 5. He also will
visit in Munich, Germany,
Paris and London in connec
tion with the conference.
Wharton was born in Gold
Hill, and was a ranger at
Crater Lake National park
while he attended college. He
is a graduate of Medford High
school and the University of
California at Berkeley. His
parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E.
Wharton, and brother, Ted
Wharton, live in Medford.

Funeral Services Held

Ben O. Capello were ' held
Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 10 a.m.
from St. Joseph's Catholic
church in Yreka with the Rev.
Thomas Boland officiating.
Interment was in the family
plot in St. Joseph cemetery.
A Rosary was recited Tues
day evening in Girdner's Fun
eral chapel.
Mr. Capello, 71, retired
Fruit Grower's Supply com
pany employee, died Sunday
in Siskiyou County General
hospital, after a series of
heart attacks over the past
several months.
He was born in Italy on
May 20, 1887, and came to
the United States in 1910, first
settling in Yreka. In 1911
he moved to Hilts, where he
was employed until his re
tirement in 1952. After his
retirement, he and his wife,
Lucia, made their home in
Mt. Shasta until her death' in
1955. He has made his home
in Yreka since that time.
Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Norma Ellis
of Yreka, and Mrs. Alba At
kins now of Japan; two sons,
Frank Capello of Hilts and
Anthony Capello of Medford.
A son, Angelo F. Capello was
killed in action during World
War II.
Mrs. H. G. Thompson and
daughter, Marilyn, returned
home Saturday after spend
ing a week in Medford with
friends and relatives.
Ed Self of Oakland was a
guest of Jay Trinca for sev
eral days. He returned to his
home Thursday morning.
Mrs. Vern Burns entertain
ed a group of boys and girls
with a wiener roast and swim
ming party at Jackson Hot
Springs Saturday, Aug. 2, in
honor of her son, Danny's 10th
birthday. Guests were'Miriam
Barron, David Powers, Billy
Wilson. Paula Eastman and
his sister, Donna Burns. Birth
day cake was served in addi
tion to the wieners.

their daughter, Mrs. Harold
McFerrin and son, Terry, of
Redding. Terry is recuperat
ing from a broken foot, suf
fered in a fall at his home.
They were brought north by
Harold McFerrin who re
turned home Sunday, accom
panied by Mrs. Frank Graves,
who will be the guest of her
son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Philip York, and
children in Redding for sev
eral days.

Lumber Firm Sued
Over Bad Water
Grants Pass (UPD Three
lawsuits were filed in Circuit
court here against the Bates
Lumber Company of Oregon
charging , that the company
supplied contaminated drink
ing water for three employees
at its plywood plant at Merlin,
west of here.
The complaintsall of which
charge that the plaintiffs be
came ill from drinking the
water, were filed by Charles
Jackson, Leroy Wilson and
Chester Patterson who ask a
total of $475,000.
The three men contend that
numerous tests and analyses
disclosed that the water at
the Merlin plant was contaminated.
