Oahu Swept by
Tropical Storm

cal storm which has already
taken one life swept over the
island of Oahu today with
winds of 50 to 70 miles per
hour.
The disturbance struck the
island of Hawaii early Thurs
day, causing a plane crash
that killed Walter Moniz, 29,
Hilo. His plane crashed on a
sugar plantation, barely miss
ing a group of workers, as
Moniz attempted to land in
strong winds.
Injured in the crash were
Fred Jong, Honolulu, and
Constantine Gofas, 26, Uni
versity of Hawaii student
from San Francisco.
Two Hilo, radio stations
were off the air temporarily
when wind knocked down
their aerials.
The weather bureau issued
a gale warning for all Ha
waiian .waters today and
warned there may be lowland
flooding.
Navy Authorized
To Serve Oieo

tee has approved House-
passed legislation authorizing
but not requiring the
Navy to serve oleomargarine
instead of butter.
The Senate group wrote in
a restriction that the Navy
cannot acquire margarine
"when surplus butter stocks
are available to the Navy
through the Commodity
Credit Corp."
The only exception to the
latter would be "in special
. overseas upon certification
that the use of butter in such
areas would be impractical
Dulles To Receive
VFW Citation
Kansas City, Mo. (DPD
Secretary of State John Foster
Dulles has been named by
the Veterans of Foreign Wars
for its 1957-1958 Bernard
Baruch Gold Medal award
and citation.
The recipient of the annual
award is judged by the VFW
to have contributed most "to
the cause of American se
curity, unity and world
peace."
National Commander Rich
ard Roudebush, Indianapolis,
Ind., said Thursday Dulles
would receive the award at
a distinguished guests ban
quet Aug. 18 at the 59th VFW
convention in New York.
Dulles will deliver the key
note address that night.
Past winners of the award
were Baruch, Dwight D. Eis
enhower, Cardinal Francis
Spellman, Richard M. Nixon,
Billy Graham, Henry Cabot
Lodge Jr. and Harry S. Truman.
