Balloon Ascension
To Stratosphere
Turns To Failure
Crosby, Minn. (UP! A gi
gantic plastic balloon contain
ing a female monkey, frogs
and goldfish as passengers col
lapsed today at 60,000 feet
about an hour after it started
a 25-mile trip to the strato
sphere. Air Force spokesmen said
it would have been the larg
est plastic balloon ever
launched.

Sap Ito to IMJlffl M I
tories official here said it was i
not known what caused the
failure. He did not know
whether the monkey or other
contents of the balloon sur
vived. Similar Attempt Failed
A similar launching at
tempt on July 30 failed when
the balloon of about the same
size was destroyed by sharp
air currents at 40,000 feet.
The balloon soared sky
ward from an open-pit mine
near here at 6 a.m. (c.d.t.).
The Air Force lost contact
with it at 7 a.m.
The monkey was strapped
with photosensitive plates to
measure the cosmic rays. The
Air Force stressed that the
flight was planned to insure
the monkey would not be
harmed as a result of the test.
To Study Damage
The frogs and goldfish, as
well as onions and potatoes,
were sent aloft to study any
cell damage that might occur
at the 25-mile altitude.
In addition, fruit flies and
a type of fungus, neurostora,
were included in the cargo to
see if cosmic rays cause any
genetic or hereditary changes
The giant balloon, made of
thin polyethelene plastic, mea
sures 233 feet m diameter and
weighs 650 pounds. It has a
capacity of five million cubic
feet when inflated to its full
est.

Hoover who will be 84 next

He said former presidents

duty.
"I think a pension ought
to be given and ought to be
accepted," he said. "It could
be used either to support the
families of former presidents
or it could be used for char
ity." Hoover pointed out that
judges and generals retire on
pensions.
"About the only person
who doesn't is a president,"
he said.
Alert Girl Saves
Brothers, Sisters
Dallas, Ore. (UPD An alert

with saving the lives of her
four younger brothers and
sisters Wednesday morning as

Frances Shaffer, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John Clay
ton, was taking care of the
children while her parents
and four other children were
picking beans near Independ

later.
A pet monkey and a small
dog were burned to death in
the blaze, only a few blocks
