ruining my life.
Mrs. F. L.: I don't know
how to change his ways.
Roberta L.: What can a
girl of 17 do to make her fa
ther understand that he could
ruin her life "and others in
the family as well by his an
tisocial attitudes?
My father just plain don't
like people. He is very
grouchy and never smiles at
people and has never made
any friends. He is so unfriend
ly that sometimes my friends
have asked me, "Why doesn't
your father like me?" How
can I explain he acts like that
to everyone?
The worst of it is that I
don't make friends easily my
self and I feel if my parents
had friends I could be friends
with their children.
I have only had a few dates
in my whole life and I don't
know what will become of
me if things go on this way.
Sometimes I feel there is no
use in living if you are going
to be old maid.
Mrs. F. L.: I have had a
long, hard struggle with my
husband trying to change his
ways. I used to be a very so
cial person myself, but gave
up when it just became im
possible for the two of us tq
go out socially and to enter
tain friends like normal
couples.
Roberta's problem is ter
rible and she has taken to
crying constantly about it. I
have tried to reason with my
husband, explaining he is
ruining her life, but I can't
seem to make a dent in him.
My husband loves the chil
dren, but just ignores me or
says it's nonsense when ' I
point out to him the harm he
is doing.
He- retreats into his shell
behind the papers or in front
of the TV set every night
and says everyone should do
what he likes best.
The rest of the family can
just go hang as far as he is
concerned.
The Council: It is doubtful
whether pleading and con
stant arguments have ever
changed anybody. Certainly,
they are unlikely to change
a mature man who states flat
ly he has no intention of
changing.
Roberta and her mother
should recognize, however,
that Roberta's problem is
somewhat separate and is not
as strongly influenced by Mr.
F. L.'s behavior as they be
lieve. Roberta's concern about
winning friends and a hus
band is a normal teen - age
anxiety. It is a problem she
alone will have to solve, and
she should realize that even
teen-agers with very friendly
fathers and parents who have
an active social life suffer
from this anxiety. They sim
ply go to work at solving the
problem as well as they can.
In America the best of
fathers do not find dates and
husbands for their daughters.
The few who attempt to do so
usually 'meet with failure be
cause the majority of young
men resent pressure of this
kind from their seniors.
Mrs. F. L. seems to be en
couraging her daughter to
place blame for her failure on
her father. Possibly Mrs. F. L.
is trying to use this situation
as a weapon against her hus
band. But she is doing-Roberta a
great disservice. As long as
the girl can put the blame on
somebody else she will jiot
go about solving her problem.
Her tears deserve little sym
pathy and should not be en
couraged. Roberta should be told in
no uncertain terms that she
must dry her eyes, screw up
her courage and get out and
rustle up those friends. If she
learns to make herself well
liked, her friends won't notice
her father very much.

Raincoat Travels
Farther Than Owner
Harrisburg, Pa. (UPI) Carl
A. Carbone, a drug salesman,
travels a great deal but not
as much or as far as his rain
coat. Carbone makes it a prac
tice of picking up hitch-hiking
servicemen, and, when
it's raining, of loaning them
his raincoat. He has never
failed to have it returned,
either by mail or express.
"The raincoat has been
sent from India, Hong Kong
and other places around the
world," he, said, "but it al
ways comes back. I shall
keep loaning it out."
In 1917, J. P. Morgan pre
sented his father's collectio'n
of 3,000 pieces of art to the
Metropolian Museum of Art.

Phlebitis
Phlebitis means an inflam
mation of the veins, usually
of one leg and thigh. The com
monest form of
a bad phlebitis
is the so-called
called "m ilk
lee" which

after they have
given birth to
a child. This is
parti cularly
likely to hap

pen to women who are over
weight. Perhaps during partu
rition the big veins in the pel
vis are bruised a bit, or they
are influenced in some way so
that the blood tends to clot in
them and to plug them up.
Then, for the rest of a wom
an's life, she has a tendency
for the leg to swell, especially
in hot weather, or when she is
on her feet a great deal.
Often she has to wear a tight
elastic stocking or an elastic
bandage. Fortunately, phlebi
tis seldom flares up again in
a bad form. Usually, the per
son has just the one bad at
tack. In other cases, a phlebitis
will follow an abdominal
operation. Apparently, the
blood develops too strong a
tendency to clot, or perhaps
there are some rough places
inside the veins. We doctors
do not understand the disease !
as well as we would like to.
Today, in some hospitals, pa
tients who are operated on
are given a daily dose of a
drug like Dicumarol, which
lowers the tendency of the
blood to clot, and thus great
ly lessens the tendency of the
patient to get a phlebitis.
Fortunately, in many cases,
after a phlebitis has caused
the large vein in one thigh to
become practically closed up,
channels open through the
clot, and eventually enough
blood gets through so that the
person can walk well enough.
For a while after the person
has had a phlebitis, it helps
greatly to keep the mattress
at the' foot of the bed raised
on a bolster. With the leg
raised, the blood in the foot
and Jeg can more easily flow
back toward the heart, and,
as a' result, the swelling that
comes during each day clears
up each night.
Transplanting Cornea
For some time it has been
possible to take a person, the
front "windows" or corneas of
whose eyes are badly scarred
and frosted, and make a little
clear window with the help of
a piece of cornea taken from
someone who died, and per
haps left his eyes to an eye
bank. Now, Dr. Nicholas G.
Georgiade, of Duke Univer
sity, reports that corneas can
be preserved for at least three
months. This should help
greatly.
