Studies Show No Ml Effects of Atom
(Bomb Blasts on Japanese Children
Hiroshima, Japan (UPD
The Hiroshima and Nagaski
atom bombs did not create
dwarfs or freaks.
So far, there is no evidence
that they have affected the
growth of children, either
physically or mentally.
These opinions were con
curred in by both Japanese
and American doctors in Hiro
shima and Nagasaki today, on
the 13th anniversary of the
Hiroshima A-bomb.
Their observations were
based on independent and
joint scientific studies into
one of the most widely feared
effects of nuclear warfare to
day the nightmare birth of
a race of freaks.
Studies Continue
The studies are still in pro
gress. The results of one of
the most extensive studies
along this line the biochem
ical assay of hormones of 1,
700 children exposed to A
bomb radiation in their moth
ers' wombs by the U. S.-di-rected
Atomic Bomb Casualty
commission and an unnamed
Japanese university is to be
made late next year.
But the scholars believe
their tentative conclusions
are based on sound founda
tions. The timing of these investi
gations is especially signifi
cant because the unborn
children of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki are now entering
puberty that stage when
children grow into adults.
Period of Change
"This is the period when
any evidence of any change
should be measured," said Dr.
George Darling, director of
the ABCC. "It would have to
be within the next year or
two that this study would
have to be carried out."
Japanese research into the
effect of radiation on school
children has been concentrat
ed chiefly in Nagasaki.
Dr. Nariyuki Izumi, direc
tor of the Nagasaki Univer
sity hospital and a leading au
thority on children's diseases,
said, "our studies of children
in Nagasaki show almost no
difference among children ex
posed to the atom bomb and
those who were not in weight,
height, resistance to illness
and immunity. We found it
difficult to believe but that is
what our studies showed.
Dr. Ichiro Hayashi, profes
sor of Pathological anatomy
at the same university, said,
"There may be some individ
ual cases of feeble-minded
children and other freaks.
But I found no extreme ef
fects attributable to the atom
bomb."
Dr. Darling commented,
"When the results are in on
our study, we may have scien-

We don't expect any real dif
ference one way or another."
Observers considered it
doubtful that the observations
of these scholars would have
any braking effect upon the
masses here at a time every
year when pacifist and left
wing groups concentrate upon
whipping up anti-A-bomb hys
teria. )
Views Reconsidered
But they interpreted
the statements of the Japan
ese as reflecting the trend of
Japanese scientists to recon
sider and re-assess their earl
ier views about the far-reaching
effects of radioactivity
upon the human body.
Dr. Izumi said his study of
school children in Nagasaki
showed:
"Absolutely no differ
ence in absences from school
among those exposed to the
atom bomb and .those who
were not. The average num
ber of colds was absolutely
the same."
-r "After giving them diph
theria, typhoid and BCG (anti-tuberculosis)
injections, we
found the same ratio of im
munity." In weight and height,
"there was not much differ
ence." Izumi said primary school
teachers reported a large per
centage of nervousness and
inability , to concentrate in
A-bomb exposed children. In
drawing, they showed a slow
er rate of progress and
"found it harder to grasp sub
jects requiring reasoning pow
er such as mathematics."
"Of course," he added, "we
cp n't tell whether these dif
ferences are the direct results
of atom bomb radiation or
due to emotional or environ
mental disturbances . caused
indirectly by the A-bomb."
Congress Warned
Of $400 Billion
Spending Splurge
Washington (UPD Fed
eral Budget Director Maurice
H. Stans has warned Congress
there is a "strong pssibility"
the federal government will
spend as much as $400 bil
lion over the next five years.
That would average well
over 82,000 for every man,
woman and child in the coun
try. Stans made the statement
when he was questioned by
the House Ways and Means
Committee about the admin
istration's request for legisla
tion raising the ceiling on the
national debt to a peacetime
record high of $288 billion.
The testimony was made
public in advance, of a drive
by House leaders to ram the
legislation through the House.
The administration bill for
the next two years would
raise by $8 billion the tempor
ary limit of $280 billion. It
would raise the permanent
ceiling to $285 billion from its
present level of $275 billion.
The request is based on the
