Upstart Pirates Mali Braves

United Pres International
Those upstart Pittsburgh Pi
rates have "braked" the Mil
waukee Braves' threatened
runaway and there may yet
be a pennant race in the Na
' tional league.
The Pirates, battling to fin
ish in the first division for the
first time since 1948, snapped
the Braves' six-game winning
streak, 4-3, Monday night on
a ninth-inning homer by Ro
berto Clemente. The San
Francisco Giants, who beat
the Chicago Cubs, 6-4, in an
afternoon game, thus moved
within four games of the
Braves and the Pirates moved
up to within six of the world
champions.
And so, all the talk of a
Milwaukee runaway that
started after the Braves' four
game weekend sweep of the
Giants, is quieted. The Braves
may go on to win another pen.

The ! Pirates, now three
games ahead of the fourth
place Cubs, have won four
straight games and 17 of 26, a
.654 pace since July 4 when
they were in seventh place.
For the last week or so,
they've been getting the best
pitching in either league
they had a string of 34 con
secutive scoreless innings
when the Braves scored in the
third inning Monday night
and they're getting long-ball
punch from such relatively
under -publicized players as
Clemente, Bob Skinner and
Dick Stuart.
Skinner drove in the Pi
rates first three runs Monday
night with a two-run single
in the first inning and an in
field out in the fifth. That pro
duced a 3-3 tie that stood
until Clemente's ninth -jn-ning
fiomer gave rookie Curt
Kaydon his fifth win and

Willie Mays showed signs
of going off on another "tear"
when he hit a homer, double
and single and stole a base to
spark the Giants' eight-hit at
tack. The homer was Willie's
17th and first since July,2. He
doubled in the fifth, stole

Gardener lake, about a 15
mile drive from Medford is
a relatively new body of
water but its small size and
calm waters make it an ideal
ski tourney site.
The lake is on Yankee
creek, a tributary of Antelope
creek. It is filled with winter
waste water from about seven
square miles of watershed. On
the farm of the Victor Gar
dener family, the lake was
built for irrigation. Its recre
ational features are incident
al. When full the lake has a
55-acre surface and a depth
of 50 feet with 1200-acre feet
capacity. Earth moving for
the reservoir was done in
1951 and the dam fill requir
ed 160,000 yards of earth.
Tickets for the water ski
meet are on sale at Purucker
Piano house, Barker's Men's
store and Lamport's Sporting
Goods store. Crater Lions also
are printing a souvenir pro
