Is That
By EUGENE BURNS
Ranger-Naturalist
Baghdad Bulbul means
nightingale in Arabic, but
they seem to use it here both
for the nightingale that sings
and for a bird that closely re
sembles it but chiefly makes
a cooing noise.
I heard and saw both kinds
yesterday. Both have a dull
olive coloration with a yel
lowish tinge. They are nearly
the size of a robin, and have
ST1

much the same diet fruit,
berries, insects, and seeds.
The most noticeable differ
encs between them are in
their songs and in the fluffier
plumage said to be on the
bird that coos rather than
sings. Also, the singer flies
north in the spring and re
turns in September while the
other stays around all year.
Though I have heard night
ingales before, I never heard
one with such a lovely song
as the one here in Baghdad.
He was singing in a hedge,
and since we advanced very
quietly on him, we were able
to get close enough to see him
without being alarmed.
Such an occurence is not
too unusual. The nightingale
sometimes seems to become
enchanted with its own voice,
and if there are no abrupt
movements or noises to inter
rupt it, there is no reason
why it should take fright.
The song began on a soft
note that quickly climbed in
volume. There seemed to be

a lilting cadence to it that
gave way to a series of rolls
and trills. The trilling died
away in a lament that was
succeeded by a rapid run of
notes ending in what I can
best describe as a shake in
the bird's voice. The song was
repeated several times, and
there are cases in which 20 or
more full repetitions have
been given.
Powerful Throat Muscle
According to ornithologists
who have dissected nightin
gales, they have the most pow
erful throat muscle structure
of all the song-birds. I am
quite willing to believe it. The
length and power of their
song, plus the frequent repe
tition, certainly should give
it to them.
Those that live in Baghdad
are said to be the same as
those that winter in Africa
after returning from their
spring and summer sojourn in
Europe.
As for the one that makes
only a cooing noise, except for
occasional variations of a de
cidedly nonmusical nature, it
is a certainty that he is not
the bulbul the Arabs mean
when they celebrate the night
ingale's song in poetry.
The Arabs are a highly
poetic, music-loving people.
Judging from the tributes
they have paid the nightin
gale in innumerable verses,
they refer only to the one that
flies north to the more tem
perate climates for spring and
summer.
