Lost Week End Lorer
Tina wonders if she should
marry Tim. She loves him,
he's a great guy but he
drinks a great deal too much,
she thinks. She certainly
couldn t abide a husband who
was so close to being alcho-
lic. Can she make him so
happy with her that he will
not feel the need of alcohol?
can she help him "taper
down to being merely a soc
ial drinker?
Here at the American In
stitute of Family Relations in
Perk Up Creamed
Onions With Curry
New York UPD Vary the
creamed onion routine with
the tang of curry. Peel and
cook 1V4 pounds small white
onions in boiling salted water
until tender.
Melt 2 tablespoons butter
or margarine, blend in 2 ta
blespoons flour, 1 teaspoon
each of curry powder and
salt, and Is teaspoon black
pepper.
Add 114 cups milk, cook
and stir until thickened
Drain onions, place in 1-quart
baking dish, cover with sauce
and sprinkle with Vi cup
grated American cheese. Bake
in preheated moderate (350
degree) oven 10 ' minutes
Serves 6-8.
The latest findings in the
care of infants and children
are covered in a recent man
ual, "The Challenge of Chil
dren," by Cooperative Par
ents' Group. The book has
been added to the many other
practical volumes on child
care available at the Medford
public library.
Games, puzzles and activity
ideas for the entire family are
outlined in a new book, "The
Complete Family Fun Book,"
by Phyllis Cerf and Edith
Young. The book has been
added to the Medford public
library.
Potato Chip Spread
New York (UPD A creamy
spread for serving with hot
potato chips is made by blend
ing 1 cup sour cream with Vi
cup catsup, 1 tablespoon an
chovy paste, 1 three-ounce
can of salmon paste and the
juice and finely grated rind
of 2 limes.
Los Angeles, we receive many
inquiries about such lost week
end lovers: are they good mar
riage-material? Will they ever
outgrow their habit-patterns?
Are they, in short, good risks?
The individual who drinks
to excess is a person with a
serious personality adjustment
problem. A man (or woman)
who drinks excessively some
times is one who wants "moth
ering." He has regressed. Of
ten he marries a woman with
a pronounced mother-urge,
and unwittingly she becomes
partially responsible for his
continued alcoholism. Or
sometmes the alcholic is a hos
tile person who attempts to
solve, his hostility by escaping
through drink.
Many women flatter them
selves by thinking they can
reform on alcoholic, because
they do not know the nature
of alcoholism. True alcoholism
requires far more skilled
treatment and understanding
than most of us can give. It
requires medical and psycho
logical care, patience, and
well-directed sympathy, in
the right amount and at the
correct time. Blame, criticism,
nagging the tools that are
sometimes used are ineffec
tive. The case usually calls for
trained treatment in the hands
of a specialist.
In any case of alcoholism,
the basic cause of the trouble
must be isolated. Why does
Tim drink? And why does it
affect him so adversely? Is
his problem emotional, chem
ical, psychological, or a com
bination of these? Only with
proper diagnosis can proper
treatment follow.
But after Tim's "cure", asks
Tina, can he become a social
drinker without fear of relapse?
According to most authori
ties, the answer is no. Tim
must avoid situations which
will lead him back along the
way he has just travelled. A
true alcoholic must never
drink. Alcoholics Anonymous
aid in this rehabilitation pro
cess, as do many churches. An
understanding family or wife
can help also. But the job is
long, and Tina should be fully
aware that such a marriage is
subject to tremendous strains
and that it may lead to com
plicated, if no intolerable situations.
Washing Tips
For Diapers
Philadelphia (UPD The
diaper service industry, con
fident it has grown out of its
short pants, now dares tell
mother how to wash her
baby's diapers at home.
Of course the implication
remains that no matter how
well mother does it, the dia
pers won't be as clean or san
itary as if they had been
washed professionally.
The industry's organization
with headquarters here, says
that even using their ppinters
mother can't duplicate exact
ly "the fourteen steps taken
by the professional diaper
service to insure clean, germ
free, antiseptic-treated dia
pers." The diaper industry, after
due consideration for its busi
ness future and the public re
lations effect on millions of
mamas, says this is what
should be done with soiled
diapers:
Keep them in a tightly
closed container filled with
soap or disinfectant solution
until you are ready to wash
them. Rinse diapers in clear,
cool water, then place them in
automatic washer or laundry
tub. A maximum load of 17
diapers is suggested for best
results in home" equipment.
Wash diapers in at least
three sudsings. Use maximum
amount of soap or detergent.
Use water softener if nec
essary. Bleaching "an important
step in the scientific diaper
service process" - can be
risky. Add the minimum
bleach necessary to the third
sudsing.
Five to seven separate rins
es are necessary to eliminate
any residue of soap or deter
gent. Boil diapers for at least 20
minutes. Allow to cool in cov
ered containers. Wash your
hands before removing cooled
diapers, Hand wring. Treat
with antiseptic. Hand wring.
Dry for at least one hour at
high temperatures in auto
matic dryer or hang in sun.
Store in clean, dust-free place.
If this program drives
mother to the arms of the pro
fessional diaper services . .
well, maybe that's what they
intended all along.
Linen and damask table
cloths will not wear or be
come soiled at the folds if
they are rolled on a pole or
window-shade roller when
put away. Wrap in tissue
paper before storing.
