San Francisco opens a four
game series with Milwaukee
tonight that may determine
whether the surprising Giants
are going to stay in the hot
National league race.
Now trailing the World
Champions by a full game,
the Giants will send 19-year-
old Mike McCormick to the
hill against Milwaukee's Lew
Burdette. McCormick, the
surprise of the San Francisco
pitching staff this year, will
take an 8-2 record into the
contest. .Burdette has a so-so
9-8 mark on the season.

Win or lose, those fabulous
San Francisco Giants make
news.
Eighteen times a winner in
the last inning this season the
Giants Thursday night did a
fantastic turnabout and blew
a 10-9 decision when the Cin
cinnati Redlegs tied the score
with five runs in the eighth
inning and won the game with
a single tally in the ninth.
It was a bitter defeat for
the Giants because they dip
ped one game behind the Mil
waukee Braves, who beat the
Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1, be
hind Juan Pizarro's four-hit
pitching in an afternoon
game. And, it was doubly bit
ter, because once again Ru
ben Gomez failed in the
clutch.
Gomez is the pitcher the
Giants have been waiting to
come through all season. He
hadn't won a game in two

TO VIE AT GARDENER Colleen Dodge, 14, Sacramento,
Calif., is among the outstanding young water skiers who'll
appear Aug. 8 through 10 in the Western Regional champion
ships at Gardener lake near Medford. She was fourth in the
national tourney and second in the regional meet last year
in trick riding. Miss Dodge has won six first places in meets
so far this year.
Entry Requirements
Strict for Western
Reg
ional Ski Meet
Participants in the Western
Regional Water Ski tourna
ment at Gardener lake Aug. 8,
9 and 10, naturally will have
championship! as their goal.
But, if they can't achieve
top honors, a good number
will be satisfied with just
fifth place or better in the
various competitions in six of
the classifications.
Slat riders contending in
the Crater Lions club-sponsored
local meet, who place
among the top five in the re
spective events will qualify
for the national tourney of the
American Water Ski associa
tion later this month at Chip-
ley, Ga.
National berths will be
sought in slalom, jump, indi
vidual trick and mixed
doubles trick rivalry and in
men's, women's, veterans, jun
ior boys and junior girls divi
sions. There will be competi
tion in a pee wee dvision but
not for qualification in the na
tionwide meet.
Qualifications Strict
Not just any skier may vie
in regional on the small man-
made lake 15 miles by car
from Medford and northeast
of the Jackson county seat.
Entry qualifications for the
forthcoming meet here are
very strict, according to Lon
Skinner who is heading up
preparations for the tourney
for Crater Lions and for Gar
dener Lake Ski club.
In thn first place skiers to
be eligible must be members
of ie ASWA with current
dues pcud. They must be resi
dents ci the United States for
six months preceding the re
gional and must be prepared
to prove residence in the re
gion for a six months period
since the first of the year.
In addition the ASWA has
a rating system to determine
eligibility for a regional or
natonal meet. In the men's
division, ages 17 through 34
years, an expert rating is re
quired for each event a skier
wishes to enter. To be eligible
for the sialom, for instance a
man must be able to run the
regulation course in both di
rections on one or two skis at
30 miles per hour.
For the jumping event a
prospective contestant must
travel a distance of 80 feet off
the six-foot jump 'and get a
form score of at least seven.

Rookies Show Power
The Giants appeared on
their way to an easy victory
on the strength of heavy slug
ging by rookies Leon Wagner
and Willie Kirkland. Wagner
had four hits, including two
homers, and knocked in three
runs while Kirkland drove in
three runs with a homer and
two singles.

To enter trick contention in
the men's class the skier must
be able to pass through a 200
yard course and score a total
of 800 points or $iore using
the trick riding values of 1958
tourney rules.
For all other divisions a rat
ing of first class is needed.
These classes are veteran, men
35 and over; women, those 17
and over; junior boys and
girls, ages 13 through 16. For
the slalom a skier must be
able to go 22 miles per hour
both ways through the course.
For jumping a leap of at least
35 feet off a five-foot jump is
required. In the tricks the
qualifier must be able to do
four or six specified tricks.
These are a 360-degree turn
on the jump, 360-degree turn
on one ski, backward start on
one ski, 180-degree toe turn,
three second side slide on one
ski or two-ski 180-degree turn
in air off wake.
First through fifth place in
invitational tourney events
also qualifies for the regional.
Since most local skiers
haven't yet had a chance to
receive a rating by the ASWA,
they will have that opportu
nity on Thursday, Aug. 7, at
Gardener lake. There will be
practice and rating activity
from 8 a.m. until dark. Boats
and drivers will be furnished
by the tournament commit
tee. Skinner is qualified by
the ASWA to rate tourney
aspirants.
Crater Lions have received
a number of inquiries from
clubs and individuals concern
ing the regional. These skiers
while a number of them are
good, have been unpracticed
in meet events and have not
been qualified for the tourney.
Some have tried to qualify
and have not been able to
make the required ratings.
