Barn Destroyed
At Trouldale
Portland (UPD A large
barn was destroyed and a
house partly charred by a
two-alarm fire in Troutdale
Wednesday.
Firemen battled the blaze
for 1 Vz hours before they
brought it under control. Two
farm tractors, a flatbed truck
and lettuce and cauliflower
crates in the barn were de
stroyed.
Loss was estimated at $5,100
for the barn and $2,500 for
the house. Spontaneous com
bustion was believed the
cause of the fire.
4-H Prefair Slafed

A 4-H prefair is slated at
the Phoenix community cen
ter Saturday, Aug. 2, accord
ing to Glenn Klein, county
4-H agent.
Beef, dairy, and sheep judg
ing will start at 10 a.m., Klein
said, and beef fitting and beef
showmanship will follow. At
1 p.m. a horse" show on the
high school grounds is sched
uled. Following the horse show
contestants will return to the
community center to conclude
the prefair with, sheep and
dairy showmanship contests.
Ore Upgrading
Program Approved
Washington (UPD The
Senate today approved a $3
million pilot program for up
grading chrome, manganese
and other ores in the defense
stockpile.
Sen. Warren G. Magnuson
(D-Wash.) said the approval
came during consideration of
the House-Senate Conference
Committee report on the inde
pendent offices' appropria
tions measure. He said con
ference committee action re
duced the program to three
million dollars. ' It originally
was a $10 million item.

gains than the recognized fa
vorites of recent sessions. Spe?

a whirl, such as the building

Some of the steels slipped
off to net losses after they
had reached new highs. The
gains at their best ranged to
more than a point with activ
ity centered on U.S. Steel,
Bethlehem, and Detroit Steel.
