Scattered Cancer Is not
Always Fatal
Most of us look on scattered
and inoperable cancer as al
ways fatal, but actually, this
is not quite
true. As my
friend, Dr.
Max Culter,
an authority

number of cases in which a
person who was supposedly
doomed lived on for many
years, perhaps without any
treatment. As Dr. Culter
wrote-recently, in many cases
in which a cancer was treated
by surgery or radiation . the
patient has remained well
even though the surgeon knew
that at operation he had been
unable to remove all of the
tumor tissue. Some of it per
haps had invaded a large ar
tery which could not be re
moved. What seems to happen
in these cases is that when the
main mass of the tumor, is
removed, the body's resistance
surges up, and the person's
tissues regain their ability to
hold down the. growth of the
bad cells that remain here
and there.
That these remaining bad
cells can for long stay alive
in the body is shown by the
fact that sometimes 10 or 15
years after the incomplete op
eration, when perhaps the per
son has become weakened by
some acute illness',, the cancer
starts to grow again. Few
even of us physicians realize
sufficiently how strong the re
sistance of some human bodies
is to the growth of cancer
cells. When, recently, a num
ber of men in a State prison
volunteered to have cancer
cells put under their skin,
these cells were soon destroy
ed, and did not go on to form
a cancer. But when cancer
cells were put into the bodies
of persons who were very ill
with cancer, and hence had
had their natural resistance
broken down sometimes grew.
Inoperable Cancer
I will never . forget seeing
one day an autopsy on a wom
an who had died of heart dis
ease. Seven years before, she
had had an inoperable can
cer of the neck of her womb
destroyed by radium, and af
ter that she had had no fur
ther symptoms from the dis
ease. But when her abdomen
was opened, there the path
ologist found a chain of
lymph nodes as big as wal
nuts, filled with cancer cells,
the growth of which had been
stopped.
I remember another wom
an, a scnooi teacner in uaiii-
ornia who, shortly before I
saw her, had had one breast
removed for cancer. When she
had some pains in one of her
hip bones, I x-rayed it and
found it full of cancer cells. I
had an x-ray man give her
some treatment, and with this
she lost ' her pain. Fourteen
years later, after she had fal
len and, bumped the bone, I
x-rayed it again,; and there
were the cancer cells appar
ently unchanged. Again, I had
her treated with x-rays and
again, she went f o r years
without trouble.
I can remember a big hus
ky rancher who went down to
skin and bones with a big
cancer of the stomach. At op
eration, all the surgeon
could do was to make a by
pass opening between the
man's stomach and' his bowel
so that he could 'handle food
again. The tumor was not
touched. Four years later,
when I met the man's physi
cian, I asked when the fel
low died. "Died; nothing,"
said the doctor; "he got fat
and husky again, and that is
the way he, is now.
Man Cancels Plans
Extensive statistics show
that a few persons with cancer
of the stomach found - at an
operation, and not all remov
ed, do not die. Many men with
cancer of the prostrate gland
do not die quickly of it. The
other day, as I was talking
with Dr. William Braasch, one
of America's greatest ur.olo
gists, he was telling me . of a
distinguished man of 45 who
came to him 17 years ago for
a check-over. He was planning
to run for a high office, and
wanted to know if he was in
good shape physically. When
Dr. Braasch found a typical
storiy-hard cancer of the pros
trate gland, the man cancel
led his plans for nuining for
the office. After many years,
when it became evident that
his cancer was of the type
that grows- for a while and

then calms down, the man ran
for the office; he was elected,
and for years now has served
ably. . .
Years ago I was much in
terested in reading reports
from the Middlesex hospital
in England, in which, in the
days when little surgery was
attempted, hundreds of wom
en with' cancer of the breast
were just taken care of but
not operated on "radically" as
they are today. What impress
ed me was that (as I remem
ber) some 10 per cent of these
women who were not operat
ed on lived for several years,
and 5 per cent lived for 5 or
10 years -or more.
As all experts know, the
cancer quacks get most of
their claims to success from
treating people like this who
gained the ., impression from
their physicians that their
case was hopeless, when, ac
tually, the tumor cells were
so greatly weakened by some
radiation of operation that
they stopped growing and re
mained dormant for many
years.
It is probable that before
we get a cure for cancer, we
will get drugs which will so
increase the body's resistance
to the growth of cancer cells,
that this tide will turn against
the cancer and in favor of the
body. The tumor will stop
growing, and, the patient will
live on for years.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.
