Is That So?
Bagdad, The onanger or
wild ass is becoming increas
ingly scarce in southwestern
Asia, but up near the Iranian
border, we managed to see a
small band pf them.
They had been spotted the
day before and after five
hours of rugged driving, we
7-8-58
got in sight of them for a
minute or so. They were a
good mile away, in a grassy
space near a fold in the hills.
Two were colts, not much
more than two months old at
the most, since May and June
are the foaling months. As
we looked at them, the whole
band suddenly fled at a gallop.
A little later, and much
nearer, we saw a stallion. His
cinnamon-colored coat glis
tened in the sun as he took off
in a burst of speed that Silky
Sullivan might envy.
They are so wild because
they are hunted both for sport
and food. Their flesh is said
to be like venison, though of
a much finer quality.
. And that is the reason, plus
the high-powered rifle, why
they are becoming increasing
ly rarer.

By EUGENE BURNS
Ranger-Naturalist
In the early part of the
1900s, it was not uncommon
for herds numbering as many
as 1,000 to be found from
northern Iraq east and north
through Iran into Afghanistan
and Kazakstan. But now that
so many of these people have
acquired modern rifles in
place of the old trade guns
that were actually less effec
tive than a strong bow, the
sight of a herd of 100 is re
markable. Though the Arabs used to
capture wild asses occasionly
using fast camels, by the
way it doesn't happen very
often now. They only succeed
ed in capturing foals, and to
day's survivors, as we saw,
aren't taking any chances on
humans, of any kind.
Bray Different
As to how much blood of
the onanger there may be in
the domesticated donkey, I
don't know. It probably isn't
very much. Most of the don
keys used in the west are de
cendants of an African wild
ass. His feet are broader than
the onanger's and his ears are
larger and longer. In addition,
his bray is different. The on
anger and other Asiatic wild
asses are said to squeal and
make guttural sounds quite
unlike the peculiar razzing of
the donkey.
Since asses generally are
stronger work animals than
horses and live longer, and
since in the wild state they
give every indication of being
as fleet as any horse, it seems
strange that greater efforts
have not been made to domes
ticate onangers.

Portland's 'Secretary of the Year'
Finds It Difficult To Get Work Done
By DOUGLAS CRIPP
United Press International
Portland UPI The
only problems about being
"Secretary of the Year" is
that you can't get your work
done. And you have to work
harder too.
That is the gentle complaint
of Mrs. Genevieve Bell, 44,
of Portland, who was given
the award a week ago at the
National Secretaries Associa
tion conclave in Minneapolis.
Told to Take Day Off
Mrs. Bell, who works for a
Portland plastic surgeon, has
had so many congratulatory
visits and phone calls that
she's finding it difficult ,to
catch up. Her first day back
from the convention she was
late for work, but her boss,
Dr. Verner Lindgren, didn't
care. He told her to take the
day off and relax which she
said she couldn't do.
Although a veteran of 24
years a s a secretary, Mrs,
Bell dislikes the term, "career
woman." She's been married
for 17 of those years to a psy
chology professor at Portland
State College, Keith Bell, and
is as devoted to her home as
to the office.
Likes to Play Golf
When not practicing her
secretarial skills or homemak
ing, she likes to golf, fish or
listen to classical music. Mrs.
Bell is a brown-haired, studi
ous type with a warm smile
and a soft voice and she be
littles the tough, machine-like
