were obtained from a savings
and loan association.
Savings and loan associa
tions date back to 1831 127
years ago when the first
one was founded in Frank
ford. Pa., now part of Phila
delphia. Today there are 6,200
of them in urban centers with
aggregate assets of S48.2 bil
lion. 42 Billion Dollars
The associations in 1957
were repositories for 42 bil
lion dollars of savings of 22
million Americans and they
did 38 per cent of the nation's
home financing.
The fact book quotes cen
sus reports showing 44,325,-
units
these

in non-farm areas. Of
26,595.000 were owner -occupied.
Since 1950, the book re
veals, the number of home
owning families has increased
by 34 per cent and is 2Vz
times what it was in 1940.
Home ownership is found
among all income groups.
About 40 per cent of all fami
lies with incomes under $3,
000 owned their homes in
1957. Of the families with in
comes of 3,000 to 5,000 dol
lars, 40 per cent to 50 per
cent were home owners.
Urban Growth
It was abserved that al
most seven out of 10 dwell
ings erected last year were
built in metropolitan locali
ties Los Angeles leading
with 80,000 units: New York,
second with 51,000, and Chi
cago third with 42,000.
Though most areas showed
a decline in housing starts,
Phoenix, Ariz., showed a gain

Big Stuff
This building business Is
big stuff. Last year, an aver
age of 3.1 mililon persons
were engaged in building
construction, an all-time high,
and 15 per cent over 1955.
Average weekly earnings
amounted to approximately
$105, up from $102 in 1956
and $96 in 1954.
And so is financing big. To
tal mortgage debt on one to
four family non-farm houses
in 1957 reached a record high
at $107.6 billion, a rise of
$8.5 billion or 9 per cent dur
ing the year.
All consumer debt on Dec.
31, 1957, stood at $448 billion,
a rise of $2.7 billion or 6 per
cent during the year.
The conventional type mort
gage continues to represent
the major portion of the mort
gage debt. These comprise 78
per cent of the savings and
loan association portfolios.
Seventeen per cent are VA
guaranteed loans and five per
cent are FHA-insured mortgages.

Two Trailers Sunk In Blanket of Fog
Garibaldi (UPD Two troll
ing boats were sunk when a
heavy blanket of fog closed in
here Saturday night, reducing
visibility practically to zero.
The two boats, Nimrod, a
36-foot tr oiler, and a 26-foot
trolling boat were lost on the
Garibaldi jetty.
Ward Burnett, Garibaldi,
operators of the Nimrod, and
Clarence . Jacobs, Indepen
dence, Ore., operator of the
other vessel, escaped unhurt.
Burnette was taken aboard
by Edgar Eyerly, Ba City,
operator of one of two other
trollers that were inbound at
the time. Jacobs managed to
scramble to the- jetty and
walk ashore, Garibaldi Police
Chief P. F. Taylor said.
