or another, may help the men

Congenital Flatfoot
I read an article by Dr. Mil
ton C. Cobey, of Georgetown
University, Washington, D.
C, who says that much can
be done for the child who
has been born with a tend
ency to painful flat feet. It
is well that something can be
done, because such deformed
feet can cause great misery
to the person throughout his
or her life. An expert ortho
pedist can often recognize the
tendency to the development
of poorly-formed fqet.
What interests me is to
learn that there are a num
ber of operations that can be
done on children operations
that can remake the foot, so
that it can be more nearly
normal and can carry the
person's weight without pain.
In earlier life a child can be
helped by the fitting of ortho
pedic shoes, and also by the
use of certain exercises, and
by walking barefoot on the
sides of the feet. Obviously,
the thing for parents to do, is
to take the child to an expert
orthopedist.
Pine Tree Pollen May
Cause Sarcoidosis
One of the puzzling diseases
of man is sarcoidosis. It pro
duces nodules in many parts
of the body nodules that
look somewhat like those of
tuberculosis but do not con
tain tubercle bacilli. Recently,
at the meeting of the Ameri
can Society for Clinical Inves
tigation, Drs. Martin W. Cum
mings and Paul C. Hudgins,
reported evidence that "sug
gests that sarcoidosis is due
to the ingestion of pine pollen.
Such pollen has been found
to produce in animals nodules
that resemble those of sarcoidosis.
Probably the patient would
have to be highly sensitive to
the pollen in some way, be
cause of millions of persons
who live around pine trees

seen so far on this trip was
one that belonged to our host
at dinner the other evening.
The cat came into the room
while we were having our
coffee and immediately went
to sleep at his master's feet,

corner of his mouth, has to be
caught as a wild cub in order
to become a useful hunter for
man. The reason is that as
cubs they have already at first
hand learned how to hunt,
and the balance of their train
ing is then relatively no prob
lem at all. The one we saw
had been captured when it
was three or four months old
in a wooded valley some 30
miles east of the Jordan river.
He was captured in a noose
when he went to sharpen his
claws on a tree.
The procedure used in
hunting with cheetahs is to
take them hooded to the place
where game is sighted. When
the hood is removed, the cat
is shown its prey and then re
leased. The cat does not immediate
ly charge. Instead, he stalks
his prey, taking advantage of
every bit of cover until he has
got as near as possible with
out being seen. At that point,
he throws himself forward
quickly getting up to a speed

state attorney general's rul
ing has given this city a piece
of property no one else wants
and that the city, probably
won't take either.
It is on oil barge that sank
off Point Orient in January,
1952, and now resting in 54
feet of water in an area that
is part of Richmond's exten
sive tidelands.
The ruling declared the
barge the property of the city
because it has been abandon
ed. When it went down it car
ried 6,000 gallons of oil val
ued at $10,200 but much of
the oil was recovered by div
ers and the rest leaked out.

Despite some reports, the
cheetah does not usually use
a blow of his paw for the kill.
Traveling at such speed he
wouldn't have time for that.
Instead, he leaps on the beast
and goes for the throat,
Sometimes, of course, the
impact of his leap alone is
enough to kill, breaking the
animal's back or neck.
The huntsman, as soon as
he has overtaken the cheetah,
rewards it with a bowl of
blood from the prey and re
hoods it as soon as it has
drunk its fill.
The largest cheetahs are
said to attain a length of five
feet from nose tip to base of
tail and to reach a weight of
as much as 200 pounds. The
one I saw had a body length
about four feet and weighed
about 150 pounds.
