huge plastic balloon soared
aloft Saturday, bearing two
scientists, 5,000 insects and
a maze of scientific instruments.
Two veteran spacemen,
Cmdr. Malcolm D. Ross, 38,
and retired Gmdr. M. Lee
Lewis, 45, jplanned to go up
17 miles to the fringe of outer
space, before easing the 17-
story high balloon to earth
late Sunday.
At 2:42 a.m. (POT) the bal
loon, dangling a sealed and
pressurized gondola, was cut
loose from its launching site
in a 400-foot deep open pit
mine. It soared up at a' rate
between 1,000 and 2,000 feet
per minute in what U. S.
Navy spokesmen described as
"a perfect launch."
Tracking Plane
As the balloon began Its as
cent, a tracKlng plane and
tracking van swung into op
eration, following the crafts
westward course toward
North Dakota.
The first radio contact came
as the balloon reached 740
feet, and Ross and Lewis, be
gan to rattle off a series of
readings from the instru
ments. A short while later, the
Three Enter Pleas
Of Innocent to
Violence Threat
Lakeview (UPD . Three
men entered pleas of inno
cent Friday to charges of vag
rancy and threat of violence
against employees of the
White King Mine at a hearing
before Justice of the Peace
O. C. Gibbs here. ' ,
The men, Lawrence Bays,
Davey Graham, and Arnold
Holmes, were represented by
their attorney, Robert Welch.
A request for separate trials
was denied by the judge, who
also overruled Welch's de
murrer to the complaint.
Sheriff's deputies and Lake-
view city police arrested the
men here Tuesday after they
allegedly threatened non
union workers at the mine.
Trial Date Set
Judge Gibbs set the jury
trial date for 10 a.m. July 31.
Union members called a
strike against the mine opera
tions of the Lakeview mining
company July 20 after the
company had refused to rec
ognize the union as bargain
ing agent for the workers. .
The company" refused to
recognize the union on the
grounds that many of the
present employees are work
ing on a temporary basis and
it would be "unfair" to future
employees who would be
bound by an agreement that
they didn't have an oppor
tunity to vote on.
A restraining order aimed
at the striking union mem-,
bers was issued Wednesday
by Circuit Judge Charles Fos
The order prohibits union
members from threatening
violence against non - union
members who are still work

call with a genial, "what do
you say, kid?"
Delayed
The launching had been
scheduled for last Wednesday
but high winds and foul wea
ther cancelled the repeated
attempts. Last minute techni
cal problems delayed the
scheduled midnight launch
ing Saturday, and Ross and
Lewis spent the final hours in
a pressurized van at the take
off point while technicians
swarmed about the balloon.
Just before takeoff the men
entered the gondola, which,
has an artificial atmosphere
of the type which would be
used in a manned satellite.
They will study the effects
of the stratosphere and cos
mic radiations on themselv
and the insects that ar shar
ing the flight.
They also will mafca obser
vations of Mars.
The vehicle was expected to
reach its peak of 84,000 feet
within two hours after the
launching, level off and re
main aloft throug Saturday
night returning to earth this
morning.

Prices Advance
In Lumber Market
Rapidly advancing prices in
green Fir dimensions and
boards has caused the sharpest
increase in Crow's Lumber
Price Index sirfce early May,
according to Crow's.
Production has remained
low this month, due to mill
vacation shutdowns, while the
demand from the east and
midwest has continued at a
relatively high level due to
an upturn in housing starts,
Crow's said.
The sudden, increase in the
demand for boards has come
as a result of higher plywood
sheathing prices, according to
Crow's, and is expected to re
main at a high point until
the critical shortage of ply
wood is eased.
Random Lengths, Eugene
reports that Fir and Hemlock
dimension, both green and
kiln dried, was attracting a
volume of business at the
mills with the buyers primar
ily interested in specific
lengths commonly used in
homebuilding. The market for
random dimensions has im
proved but it lags a step be
hind the demand for specified
lengths, the report states.
