Knowlstid Opposes Khrushchev Terms For Summit Talks

: that a Middle East summit
meeting on terms laid down
by Soviet Premier Nikita S.
Khrushchev would result in
"ancfter Munich", for the
West.
The Californian particular
ly objected to Khrushchev's
demand that.-Indian Premier
Jawaharlal Nehru participate
in the proposed meeting at
the United Nations.
Knowland also suggested
that President Eisenhower
might consider calling in for
mer Presidents Herbert Hoov
er and Harry S. Truman for
advice on the Middle East
crisis.
Of Khrushchev's summit
terms, Knowland told a news
conference: "We cannot idly
stand by and let him say who
will attend the conference and
how it will be conducted. If
we do, the United Nations' ef
fectiveness would be severely
damage and it could well
go the way of the League of
Nations."
He also criticized Khrush
chev's insistence that no votes
be taken or resolutions adopt
ed if the chiefs of state meet.
"We cannot sit back and let
the Soviet Union unilaterally
change the provisions of the
U.N. charter," the GOP lead
er said.
In another development,
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey CD-
Minn.) said the U.S. should
insist that Israeli Prime Min
ister David Ben-Gurion be in
cluded in any. summit Middle
East conference.
Humphrey said "we would
be anything but realistic if we
did not insist on including
Israel." He also urged that
the U.S.' insist that President
Gamal Abdel Nasser of the
United Arab Republic attend
the conference.
Nasser is reported willing

have been passing the word
here that this government
wanted no part of the kind of
summit conference now shap
ing up. It has been made
plain that the U.S. "is being
dragged into a conference by
circumstances mainly Brl
ish pressure and the need to
deal somehow with the Mid
east crisis.
The reaction of numerous
members of Congress to this
attitude wes- reflected in the
comment of Humphrey, a
member of the Senate Foreign
Relations committee.
"This administration's neg
ative approach will weaken
and undermine our position,"
he said in an interview.

Among the leading plentifuls
will be lettuce, potatoes, on
ions, corn, cucumbers, celery,
squash and tomatoes, many
from nearby market garden
areas.
Fruit bins will hold an ab
undance of choices, too, with
watermelons, cantaloupe and
peaches heading the list. Lem
ons will be plentiful, while
many markets will feature
blueberries, cherries, xand
grapes.
Among the top meat buys
will be those long-time favor
ites broilers, fryers, and
turkeys, along with chuck
roasts and smoked hams, for
out-of-doors eating.

Fryer chickens, pork loins,

tables will provide consumers
with a variety of good buys
this week end.
Supplies of fryer chickens
are ample, with prices mostly
1 or 2 cents a pound lower
than a week ago. Pork loins
are down 2 to 4 cents a pound
and smoked hams are 2 cents
a pound lower.
Beef Down Slightly '
Beef is in fairly good sup
ply this week, with slightly
lower prices on beef chuck
in the northwest, and rounds
and fibs 1 or 2 cents a pound
lower in the San Francisco
area. Calf, veal, and lamb con
tinue in rather light supply,
and prices are mostly un
changed from a week ago.
Lower in price this week
are plentiful fruits and vege
tables including melons, nec
tarines, peaches, plums, corn,
lettuce, squash, tomatoes,
bunched vegetables, and dry
onions. In good supply are
avocadoes, berries, figs, lem
ons, grapes, grapefruit, cauli
flower, oranges, carrots, cu
cumbers, celery, and potatoes.
Egg prices are mostly 1 to
3 cents a dozen higher this
week, and butter prices are
unchanged.

rockfish, ..halibut and sole.
