Jordanians served it.
It was almost as good as
it was surprising. It weighed
about three pounds, took half

I was somewhat mystified
as to how they got it. Ostrich

to hold 30 more eggs they
never leave it unguarded for
a moment. The hen take turns

The ostrich, by the way, is
the world's largest living bird.
A full grown cock may reach
a height of eight feet and
a weight of 300 pounds.
Though they can't fly, they
are extremely fast runners,
doing better than 25 miles
an hour and without a fol
lowing wind.
They do use their wings,
howeveF, particularly for ex
ecuting sharp turns when pur
sued by an enemy. A sudden
outthrust of a wing acts with
a rudder effect. that enables
the ostrich to take off in an
other direction far quicker
than a horse or any other
pursuer 1 could make the
shift.
Attack Young Ostriches -
Except for man, their chief
enemies are jackals and hyen
as. Those scavengers of the
desert rarely attack a full
grown ostrich whose kick if
by chance one were cornered,
is most dangerous. But. they
do attack the young and are
also very fond of the huge
eggs. As a result the cock and
hen, as soon as the eggs have
been hatched, keep a constant
watch on the chicks until the
day when they are strong
enough and fast enough to
take care of themselves.
As I thought of these things
while eating my portion of
the boiled ostrich egg, I nat

ASK BETTER DEAL
Jackson, Miss. (UPI) -The
Hinds county grand jury put
up a cry , Wednesday for
cushier chairs and cushier
pay. -It demanded that more
comfortable seats be installed
in the room where it meets,
and that the salary of grand
jurors be boosted to equal that
of state legislators attending
special sessions.
Jordanians had managed to
get close enough to a nest to
grab one. As I wondered, I
noticed the shell of the egg
was pitted. Wheels began to
turn. A main difference be
tween the ostriches of North
Africa and Arabia and those
of South Africa is that the
shells of the northern bird
are smooth. '
The egg we were eating
had been flown in from South
Africa.

Scientists Nervous
As Basil O'Connor
Upsets Apple, Carts
By DELOS , SMITH
UPI Science Editor
New York (UPI) That
highly experienced apple-cart
upsetter, Basil O'Connor, is at
it again and
it makes many
a scientist ner
vous. But all
the scientific
apple carts he
upset in the
past led final
ly to the Salk
anti-polio vac
cine. The ques-
Delos Smith tion now IS,
can apple-cart upsetting lead
to the conquest of other dis
eases? Speaking from behind the
scientific scene, this reporter
is telling you how this man
operates. It is of interest be
cause today he embarked on
vast new enterprises in public
health, and because Dr. Jonas
E. Salk himself will tell you
gladly that O'Connor is more
responsible for the Salk vac
cine than Salk.
The way O'Connor operates
is from the conviction that
all enterprises, large or small,
must have leardership. ' Real
leadership, not figurehead;
leadership which sets goals
and directs activities toward
the realization of those goals,
and meanwhile prevents peo
ple from getting bogged down
in their disagreements and
their special interests.
Guided By Facts
All this he endeavors to do
with a lawyer's strict reliance
on rooting out the "facts" and
then being guided only by
those "facts."
Twenty years ago when he
began his long span as presi
dent of the National Founda
tion for Infantile Paralysis,
he set a goal which was the
wiping out of polio as a crip
pling disease. It was an absurd
and laughable goal then. The
learned scientists knew just
about nothing about polio.
In the years since O'Connor
has enraged many a scientist
by asking, what does that
have to do with the goal, Doc
tor, no matter how interesting
it is as pure science? Or isn't
there a shorter way of getting
the same results, Doctor? Or
how can we have a vaccine 1
for polio if we don't know
whether the polio virus is
ever in the blood stream?
This reporter has seen scien
tists chuckling and shaking
heir heads, saying: How does
a lawyer dare to talk to scien
tists like that?

O'Connor says he has never
made a scientific . decision
which wasn't thoroughly
backed by his scientific ad

have advised and over the
years they number in the
hundreds have all had to
defend their advice against a
lawyer's logic based upon a

No person could be more

discussion or argument than
O'Connor who is now 66 years

and elegant tailoring of a
