June Christy
by Norman Weiser
TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES: Mercury has assembled a fine
orchestra under the direction of Herman Clebanoff, and "Songs
from Great Films" is the happy result. "This Is June Christy" pre
sents the Capitol singer at her swinging best. "Paris after Mid
night" is a musical delight from Vanguard starring the throaty
Liane. Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" get a mag
nificent reading by Morton Gould and his orchestra via RCA.
MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING: Hottest duo in show biz these
days are Louis Prima and his dead-pan frau, Keely Smith. They're
featured on a new Capitol package, "Las Vegas, Prima Style,"
which was recorded on-stage at the Sahara Hotel in the spa. "Man
Alive" marks the U.S. debut of Frankie Vaughan, the No. 1 singer
of Great Britain. Italian music is justifiably famed, and "Enchant
ment Italy," a Seeco release with Aldo Bruschi, should be, too.
TUNING IN THE TEENS: It's time for dancing, and among the
new packaged sets now available are "Dance and Stay Young,"
starring David Carroll on Mercury; "Lester Lanin Goes to College,"
Epic's entry with the tuneful Lester Lanin Orchestra; "Lush and
Latin," a Capitol cupcake from Freddy Martin and his band; and
"Lawrence Welk Presents Pete Fountain," a Coral pressing. On the
latter, you won't recognize the usual Welk tones they swing here.
COVERING THE CLASSICS: Carl Orff's "Der Mond," sometimes
referred to as a theatrical microcosm, is now recorded on Angel and
is a must for all collectors. Brahms devotees will find two excellent
releases at their record shops this month. Mercury's recording is
"Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Opus 73" as performed by the Minne
apolis Symphony, and "Eugene List Plays Brahms," on Vanguard.
Sir Adrian Boult conducts the London Philharmonic in Rachmani
noff's "Symphony No. 2," on RCA.
JAZZOMANIA: "Barbara" is title enough for Verve's new Barbara
Carroll 88-ing. "Back to Balboa" goes Stan Kenton, riding a Capitol
LP. Diahann Carroll, a fast-rising young jazz singer, gets her best
showcase to date on Vik's "Best Beat Forward." East-West presents
"The Jackie Paris Sound," young man on his way to stardom.
Who can argue with Capitol when they shout the praises of the
Four Freshmen? Just listen to "The Four Freshmen in Person" and
you'll dig, too. Drop in as "Dinah Washington Sings Fats Waller"
on Mercury, and get a load of some top vocalizing. Or, in the same
vein, try "La Vein Baker Sings Bessie Smith," a new Atlantic
effort. "In Love with Red" will be of interest to most jazz fans,
especially those who follow Red Nichols. It's on Capitol.
ADVENTURES IN SOUND: For those who want to show off their
hi-fi systems, here are a few new releases which stress sound and
offer a real challenge to any set. From Vanguard comes Bizet's
"Orchestral Suite from Carmen" and "L'Arlesienne, Suite No. 1"
performed by the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Audio Fidelity has
two LPs in this vein, "Turkish Delight" and "Grecian Holiday,"
both by Mike Sarkissian, and Mercury offers a most interesting
sound parlay of trombone and organ in "Just We Two" with Eddie
Lay ton and Buddy Morrow.
