San Francisco (LTD Per
ry Jones, Captain of the U.S.
Davis Cup team, isn't worried
about what Russia will do in
international tennis competi
tion one the Russians de
velop the game.
But, like the men heading
the track and field depart
ment of American sports,
Jones apparently has been
thinking about the Russian
system enough to have some
thoughts on the subject.
"I guess they are going to
go into tennis in a big way,"
the Los Angeles tennis star
developer said, "Jack Kramer
was telling me about his visit
over there.
"They had some plans for
building tennis courts so
they did a bit of mass produc
tion. They built 40 courts, all
in a row. But they made a
slight error. Right in the
middle of the hard-top sur
face, they had built a drain
age flue to take care of water
runoffs. Kramer told them it
would be impossible to play 1
tennis on these slanting
courts, "Next day when he
came out, he found they had
ploughed up the whole 40
courts."

Washington (LTD Major
league players should have a
voice in choosing the commis
sioner of baseball, two for
mer diamond stars agreed to
day. Jackie Robinson and Bob
Feller told the Senate judic
iary subcommittee Friday that
such a measure of self-govern-meent
among the players
would help solve some of the
sport's current problems.
However, that was about
the only point on which the
now retired major leaguers
saw eye to eye.
Robinson, for 10 years the
pride of the Brooklyn Dodg-j
ers, declared "The bonuses the
young fellows are getting to
sign contracts should not be
discontinued." Feller, the
Cleveland Indians' ex-strikeout
artist, termed them "ridic

ego of the players, cause re

orderly development of talent.

Kramer that the Russians will
be a major factor in the game
of tennis in five years. And
he is non-commital on the
possibility of the Russians en
tering Davis Cup play.
"They have to be invited
by the other countries, you
know," he pointed out. '
Girl In Finals
It was noticeable that in the
junior division at Wimbledon
last week one of the Russian
girls went to the finals indi
cating that the Russians do
know something about the
game of tennis.
And it is probable that
under the Russian "five year
plan,", they may become a po
tent force in the world's ten
nis circles.
It has been only since the
close of World War II that
the Soviet started featuring
track and field as a major
sport and already they are to
be reckoned with in many
events.
It now is possible that if
the U.S. ever gets to the place
where it can whip Australia,
it then will have to battle
Russians for supremacy
which isn't a very bright pros
pect for our dwindling tennis
fortunes.

ROSEBURG LEGION CLUB
DEFEATS MEDFORD 8-4
The Crater Lake Motors
nine dropped an 8-4 contest
with Roseburg Friday night
in an American Legion junior
baseball contest at the win
ner's field.
The host team took an early
lead in the fray, picking up
two runs in the third inning
and another one in the fourth.
Medford came back in the top
of the fifth with a single run
driven in by a sharp single
off the bat of Bob Quinney.
Roseburg took charge in the
bottom of the sixth, however,
and scored four more runs,
and then added another one
in their half of the sixth.
Starting pitcher Tom Halla
day for the winners lost his
ball control in the seventh in
ining and the Medford club
rallied with three runs be
fore relief hurler Bill Eswine
put out the fire and ended the
game.
Halladay opened . the sev
enth by issuing four straight
walks. It was then that Es
wine took over. He struck the
first batter he faced with a
pitched ball, forcing in the

scored on a wild pitch, before

walked seven.
Roseburg batters Mike Hat

collected a pair of hits, and

sixth for the final tally of
the contest.
Today the Medford nine
meets the Grants Pass ,club
