Graham, the man with the
beautiful phrases and ges

filled every one of the 22,500

East Germans Release Nine
U. S. Army Men Held Six Weeks
Frankfurt, Germany (LTD
The East German Commu
nists Saturday released nine
U. S. Army men held for six
weeks in a vain attempt to
blackmail the United States
into recognizing the East Ger
man regime. All were sun
tanned and appeared in good
health.
The nine men, eight officers
and one enlisted man, were
Search Continues
For Missing Plane
Muscatine, Iowa fUPD
The disappearance of a single
engine plane with four pas
sengers aboard missing for
eight days, puzzled Civil Air
Patrol authorities in three
states Saturday.
i Diving operations . at a
gravel pit near here Friday
night failed to turn up any
evidence. Two workmen earl
ier said they heard an ex
plosion, and saw a flash of
light and a big splash of
water in the 50-foot-deep pit
the day of the disappearance,
July 11.
Another diving and drag
ging operation continued to
probe the depths of the Mis
sissippi river near its junction
with the Wisconsin river.
The air search concentrated
on an area near Boscobel, Ws.,
where a farmer told authori
ties he heard a plane with its
engine sputtering, fly over
head July 11.
The plane, a Navion, was
reported missing on a direct
flight from Milwaukee to Des
Moines, Iowa. Aboard were
Lester Weber, 44, the pilot;
his wife, Lorraine, 42; his
brother Richard, 42, and Rich
ard's wife, Frances, all from
San Francisco.
CAP air search has been di
rected from Illinois, Wiscon
sin and Iowa.
seized by the East Germans
June 7 when their helicopter
strayed over -the east-west
border during a thunderstorm
and came down at Karl Marx
Stadt, a town 25 miles inside
the Soviet frontier. All
aboard were from the 3rd
armored division stationed in
Frankfurt. Nothing was said
about return of the helicopter.
The American Red Cross
and the East German Red
Cross arranged the release
under an agreement signed
Thursday. The agreement
said "the American side"
agreed to pay the room and
board bill for the men. It
came to 51,746.
Mrs. Alta Kemper, wife of
Maj. George Kemper of Es
condido, Calif., said she was
going to bake her husband a
cherry pie.
The eight other airmen
were:
Capt. Frank A. Athanason,
Greenville, S. C; Lt. Thomas
J. Westbrook, Macon, Ga.;
Maj. James R. Zeller, Mount
Joy, Ta.; Capt. Ian A. Brister,
Wyncote, Pa.; Capt. Paul E.
Jones, Cleveland, Ohio; CWO
Leroy J. Malone, Rice, Kan.;
and MSgt. 'Carol Rufin,

Men Turned Over
East German Red Cross
president Ludwig Werner
turned over the nine men to
American Red Cross represen
tative Robert S. Wilson at
Toepen, near Hof, Bavaria.
Carrying small ; bundles
with their personal belong
ings, the men boarded a heli
copter and flew to Frankfurt,
where 3rd Armored Division

as F. Van Atta was on hand to
greet them at the Army's
Bonames airstrip.
The nine men seemed
cheerful. All were rushed im
mediately to a hospital for a
physical examination. They
were to go home to their
wives as soon as possible.
The East Germans, by re
leasing the men, acitly ad
mitted defeat in their efforts
to force the United States to
recognize East Germany as a
sovereign state as the Soviet
Union and Red satellite states
have done.
Diplomatic Victory
However, the East German
government press office
crowed that the release was
a diplomatic victory for the
Reds. It argued that the Unit
ed States, through the Red
Cross, had "recognized the ex
istence of the German Demo
cratic Republic as a sove
reign state."
But the Red Cross is not
a United States government
agency. In fact, there was no
governmental, recognition.
The East Germans insisted
that official U. S. representa
tives negotiate the release of
the men. Secretary of State
John Foster Dulles called the
Reds "kidnapers."
The Russians refused to in
tercede, although they ap
peared embarrassed by the
lengths to which the East Ger
mans had gone.
