Ford calls for a flat 4.000-

trips), Olds recom
mends a 1,000-mile interval.
But in the summer, the com
pany suggests a change every
2,000 miles, when the owner
takes frequent week end trips.
And when the bulk of driv
ing is done on the open road,
Olds recommends an oil
change every 3,000 miles.
But other General Motors
lines differ in their oil change
recommendations. Chevrolet
suggests a 2,000-mile interval
under normal driving condi
tions; every month or bi
monthly under adverse con
ditions such as in extremely
cold weather or on dusty
roads. And Chevrolet's change
interval jumps to 4,000 miles
if the car is equipped with an
oil filter.
Pontiac Suggestions
Pontiac says its cars can go
3,000 - 4,000 miles between
changes under normal driving
conditions, with monthly
draining recommended in

top-grade oil.
Doesn t Break Down
Contrarv to common belief
(or what a greedy service sta
tion may have told you), oil
does not break down witn
use. If that were the only
factor involved, oil would
never have to be changed. But
oil does get contaminated.
Sludge, varnish, moisture,
corrosive acids, dirt and dust
can form or get into a crank
case and harm an engine.
Sludge and moisture are the
most frequently - encountered
enemies. They generally form
more rapidly in cold weather
under city driving conditions.
Experts recommend that
when you take your car in
for an oil change, first drive
around for about 20 minutes
and get the car thoroughly
warmed up. Cold oil does not
drain properly and the drain
ing may leave some of the
harmful deposits in the crank-case.
