Los Angeles Pacific Coast
League franchise was shifted
here last winter, there were
many who said the new opera
tion was doomed to failure.
But there were , a few die
hard fans who said Triple-A
baseball would click the turn
stiles at a merry pace, even
though the national sport had
been dead here for two years.
And they were right. With
a good share of the home sea
son still remaining, the In
dians have played before 190,
000 fans.
"That's tops in the minors,"
says jubilant Spencer Harris,
general manager of the Los
Angeles farm club. "We
should draw 300,000. .
In 1947, Spokane set a
Class B attendance record
which still stands when 287,
000 jammed the old Ferris
Field park.
"That proves Spokane is
a good baseball town," says
Harris. "The fans are here.
They just want to see good
baseball."
The fans now are offered
the best accommodations. The
park, built in 90-days, is per
haps the finest of its size in
baseball. There isn't a bad
seat in the place and they are
all comfortable. Parking space
is adequate and free.
"They have all the comforts
of home, and that's what it
takes to get them to the ball
park these days," says Harris.
Vets Should
For Liability
A veteran selling his home
and GI mortgage should first
contact the Veterans adminis
tration if he wishes to be
released from liability to the
government on his GI loan,
S. T. Brannock, officer in
charge of the Medford Veter
ans administration office, said
today.
Such a release protects the
veteran in the event the new
purchaser defaults in pay
ments, Brannock explained.
Brannock pointed out that
a 1956 law allows veterans
to be released from liability
to the government, provided
the new purchaser meets
credit requirements and as
sumes the veteran's obliga
tions to the government on
the GI loan.
The new purchaser need not
be a veteran, Brannock said,
and the government's guar
anty of the loan is not affect-

It doesn't look like the fish
have recovered from the 4th
of July yet for the reports all
indicate that fishing is only
"medium." With a new moon
phase this situation should im
prove and predictions are
that there will be some excel
lent fishing for the next 10
days to two weeks.
Fish lake, Willow Creek
Reservoir and 4-Mile Lake are
only fair. Upper Klamath
Lake reports that fishing is
not good but the prospects are
for an improvement. Bob
Sloan of Harriman's Resort
says that during the past week
there wa sonly one large fish
taken and that was by old vet
eran E. L. Niederman who
boated a 8Vi pound beauty.
Bob says there were a num
ber of smaller fish taken but
very few fishermen during the
past week.
Diamond Lake has been
slow with the best success on
the deep troll with flasher and
worms or Triple Teaser and
the evening fly fishing when
the fly hatch has been good.
Saw two fish taken last Sun
day on a No. 700 series green
Hot Shot trolling the east
shore. Most anglers figured
that although the fishing was
slow it would improve very
shortly.
Deschutes River, East and
Paulina Lakes have been just
like the rest of the fishing
front. The lakes will pick up
shortly but the river fishing
has reached its peak for the
season.
With the increased number
of fishermen on our lakes
there is a growing concern
about the litter and trash
which is being "heaved" over
board in the way of sandwich
wrappers, paper bags, bottles
and cans. It not only creates
an unsightly mess but is defin-

games, preliminary heats for
the 100 and 440 yard runs had
to be scheduled for today. The

The management at Dia
mond Lake are so interested
in this litter problem that they
are going to furnish litter bags
with the boats in hopes that
the anglers will save their
trash to be disposed of back at
the landing.
Recently when I was at
Paulina Lake I noticed that
they had a rack of litter bags
available for the fishermen
and were asking that these
bags be used. In many por
tions of the lake the beer can
bottle array on the bottom
was very unsightly.
This might not seem too im
portant at the present time
but if one considers that with
the thousands of persons using
these lakes, it is possible that
in the forseeable future these
lakes could well become a gar
bage dump. ,
These jewels set as they are
among the majestic hills de
serve our very best care. Let's j
extend our litter bug cam
paign to include our lakes and
streams. Let's preserve the
great outdoors so it can be
enjoyed by everyone for all
time.

night against Kansas City and
heaved his bat into the Rd
Sox dugout in disgust as he
reached the concrete steps.
It was the third time in less
than a week that Williams
has tossed his bat after strik
ing out. He flipped it under
handed toward the dugout in
anger last Saturday and threw
it high into the air Tuesday
night. ,
Williams was not expected
