Given a $40,000 bonus

was, "Well, now that they've
got their money invested in
him, let's see them get it
out."
Suddenly, however, the 22-

with added dividends. Like
Tuesday night, for example,
when he turned In a brilliant
four-hitter and struck out
eight batters in a 4-1 victory
over the Cardinals.
It was Jay's fourth triumph
of the campaign and the
Bfaves needed it to retain
their half-game lead in the
in the tight N.L. race. Hank
Aaron took care of the at
tack, driving in three runs
with his 16th and 17th homers
and a sacrifice fly. Wes Cov

Sal Maglie, who yielded all of
Milwaukee's runs.

Frick Defends
Sports Bill
Washington (UPI) Base
ball Commissioner Ford C.
Frick declared today that ex
pansion of the major leagues
is "inevitable" but predicted
it will come through larger
leagues rather than franchise
shifts.
Frick made the statement
in testimony supporting the
Senate sports bill which
would grant broad anti-trust
immunity to professional team
sports. To apply the anti-trust
laws to baseball, he said,
would be "inappropriate and
disastrous."-
The baseball commissioner
urged Congress to extend
baseball's court-endowed anti
trust exemptions to apply to
other team sports.
"Baseball firmly believes
that the anti-trust laws are
not appropriate for regulation
of any organized teams sports
and that basketball, football
and hockey as well as baseball
should have exemption for
their sports practices," he
said. j
The Justice Department
came out Tuesday against a
provision of the House-passed
sports bill roughly paral
leling the Senate bill now un
der study which would grant
anti-trust immunity to rights
to broadcast and telecast
sports games.
Frick said orderly expan
sion of the major leagues
would be "impossible" if anti
trust . suits could be filed
against the territorial rights
of baseball clubs.
He described the territorial
rules imposed on baseball
clubs and the reserve clause
binding players forever to the
teams which hold their con
tracts as "the keystones of
organized baseball."
Roberts
Gets No-No
First Try
Cliff Roberts pitched a no-
run, no-hit ball game Tues
day afternoon to lead his Med
ford Tigers to a 14-0 victory
over Lone Pine in Pee Wee
league, action. At the same
time the Medford Wildcats
edged the Central Point Pee
Wees 3-2 behind the one-hit
pitching of Highland.
Roberts, who collected a
pair of hits himself, was
backed up by the strong hit
ting of his teammates. Danny
Miles smashed a triple and a
home run, Steve Ettles col
lected a pair including a hom
er, and Mike Barnes and Cliff
Roberts each added two at
the plate. Phipps and Miles
were each credited with three
RBI's. While pitching for the
first time, Roberts walked
four and struck out eight.
The Wildcats scored their
winning run in the third in
ning after Ronny Edmonds
tripled and then scored on an
attempted squeeze. The Med
ford nine picked up its first
two . runs in the first inning
on three walks, a sacrifice fly
and an error.
Central Point came back to
tie it up in the second, scor
ing on two hits and a walk.

' And they figured that Bolt,
the temperatmental thunder
bolt of the links, would be in
that field.
The odds on Snead were
better. Bolt received a 24
hour reprieve Tuesday when
the PGA executive committee
failed to take any action
against him during a three
hour meeting. ,
Doesn't Show Up
Tommy, although he knew
the meeting was being held to
weigh his case and had ap
pealed the $500 fine assessed
against him in the Pepsi Open
two weeks ago, didn't show
up.
PGA President Harold Sar
gent received a telephone call
from Bolt, advising him he
had been delayed at Odessa,
Tex., but would be here to
day. So Sargent called a special
meeting at 6 p.m. at which
Bolt's immediate golfing fu
ture will be decided. Bolt
could, under the PGA regula
tions, be suspended from
tournament play and be as
sessed other penalties, includ
ing a fine.
The fact the executive com
mittee failed to act at Tues
day's meeting indicated to
Bolt's fellow pros that any
penalty imposed upon Bolt
would not take effect until
after this tournament. After
all, the PGA championship
has not been a financial suc
cess for years, and the powers
that be in that golfing body
wolud not want to eliminate
one of its top gate attractions
for this tourney.
In Bargining Position
Bolt's fellow pros also
pointed out that Tommy was
well aware of this situation
and that he was in a position
where he could bargain for
his rights. Thus, the consen
su was that Tommy will be
let off with a reprimand and
be allowed to join the old
golfing fraternity in a chase
to beat Snead's bid for his
fourth PGA title.
Snead has won more tour
naments and more money
than any golfer in history but
if he should win the PGA
again it would be a new first.
For the PGA, because of a
dwindling gate over the
years, changed the format of
its championship this year. It
will be four rounds of medal
play instead of the old match
play system.
Snead wasn't the only fa
vorite in the field. Ranked
right up there with him were
such shotmakers as Cary
Middlecoff, Jackie Burke, de
fending champion Lionel He
oert, and a host of others in
the star-studded field. In all,
11 former PGA champions
are in the field.

MEDFORD AND STUDS
TO CLASH THURSDAY
The Chaney Studs from
Central Point will clash with
Medford's Crater Lake Motors
nine at Cheney field Thursday
evening at 8 o'clock.
The two American Legion
junior baseball teams were
scheduled to meet Tuesday
evening but the game was
rained out.
Thursday's game promises
to produce some lively and
hard fought action. The two
clubs have split on their last
two encounters, with Medford
defeating the Studs 2-1 last
week in a district game to
take third spot in Area 4
South.
The Studs pounded Med
ford 7-0 in the game before
the district contest.
Bill Askwith, Central Point
manager, challenged the Med
ford club supporters this
morning to a contest. He
maintained that Central Point
supporters would be more
numerous than Medford fans
at the Thursday game. Ask
with also implied that the CP
rooters would leave in a vic
torious mood when the final
out was counted.
