Childers. The baby's grand
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Clif
ton Childers of the Applegate
valley.
The Applegate Valley Gar
den Club meeting June 18,
was held at the home of Mrs.
Armin Richter. Mrs. Leonard
McKee of Jacksonville gave
a talk on Iris. As a result of
hybridizing, Mrs. McKee has
developed three new 'strains
of her own which she plans
to have recorded. Assisted by
her daughter, Mrs. Clifford
Wolff, slides were shown of
her own Iris and those of
other growers in the valley.
Mrs. Maude Port, a former
resident in the valley, left this
week for her home in Eugene
after visiting her sister, Mrs.
G. J. Baughman of Ashland.

land on Sardine creek were
Mr. and Mrs. Myron Heuston
of Seattle, Wash., and Mr. and
Mrs. Percey Dunbar of Port
land. Heuston is an author,
and was interested in gather
ing material for a book. He
writes historical novels.
House guests over the July
4th holiday at the home of
Mrs. Nora Wait and Mrs. Rob
ert Sutherland were Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Robinson and
children Murray and Gordan,
of, Vancouve.r B.C. Mrs. Rob
inson is a niece of the late
Robert Sutherland. She and
Mrs. Sutherland vacationed
together two years ago when
they made a trip to Scotland
by plane to visit relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Price were
hosts to a dinner in their
home June 27 in observance
of Mrs. Bill McHargue's birtii
day anniversary. Several
friends and relatives attended.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill McHargue
and Mrs. Bill Price left for
Portland June 29 where Mrs.
McHargue planned to enter
the Portland clinic in Yamhill
June 30.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Leach
and son, Barry, have moved
into the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Dungey on Fifth ave. The
Dungeys have moved to Ox
nard, Calif.
Milton Steinmetz returned
to his' home in Gold Hill re
cently following a three weeks
vacation in Bangor, Penn.
With him he brought his
brother-in-law and sister, Mr.
and Mrs. Gilbert Hinton, of
Bangor, and his brother and
sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Raymond Steinmetz, and a
niece, Miss Joyce Steinmetz,
all of Bangor. Also arriving to J

Russell Steinmetz who drove
from Santa Ana, Calif, to join
the group. He is a brother of
Milton, Raymond and Mrs.
Hinton.

land. While in the Rogue val
ley the visitors were guests in
the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Steinmetz and family
in Medford and recently left
for Santa Ana, Calif., to visit
Raymond Steinmetz prior to
returning to Pennsylvania.

the Grants Pass Park Sunday,

and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Smith.
They were joined in the park
by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Du
senberry, Mr. and Mrs. Wood
row Kendal and family, Mr.
and Mrs. Jess Starns and fam
ily, Mrs. Robert McCormick
and baby, and the Don Har
mon family all of Grants Pass.

week's visit in Klamath Falls
where she was a guest in the 1
home of her son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan
Kesterson. Mrs. Puhl also vis
ited with Mrs. Loyd Morris
while in Klamath Falls.
Mrs. Kesterson returned to
Klamath Falls July 4.

Admit Narrow Rolls
Washington (UPI) The
House Ways and Means com
mittee, overwhelmingly ap
proved a bill " Friday to per
mit newsprint rolls as narrow
as 13 inches to, be imported
duty-free.
The law now exempts from
duties only paper rolls which
are aat least 15 inches wide.
The legislation, sponsored
by Rep. Frank Ikard (D-Tex.)
was sought by newspaper pub
lishers who said it was neces
sary to meet the trend toward
narrower newspaper pages.-
It was opposed by some do
mestic paper manufacturers
who said it would expose
them to unfair competition
from lower-priced foreign pa
per. Nuclear Test Device
Announced by AEC
Washington (UPI) The
Atomic Energy commission
said another nuclear test de
vice was exploded at Bikini
Saturday.
It was the 13th officially con
firmed test explosion since the
current series started at the
Eniwetok - Bikini proving
proving ground in April. At
least two additional tests are
believed to have been held.
The AEC said the latest ex
plosion was at 3:30 p.m. July
12 Eniwetok time (8:30 p.m.
PDT Friday).
The commission usually re
ports only test explosions
large enough to be detectable
far beyond the Pacific proving
ground. In past series it has
detonated the larger weapons
at Bikini and the smaller ones
at Eniwetok.

received word that her son,
Eugene Englebrecht, entered
the Naval university at Nor
man, Okla., July 1. Eugene
enlisted in the Navy last De

were hosts to a party recently
in their home in Sams Valley,
in honor of their son's, Sigie,
11th birthday. Guests were
Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Milkowski,
Miss Fancis Milkowski, all of
Sams Valley, and Mr. and
Mrs. Dave Cardwell and son,
Ken, of Medford.
,Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dotson
and children, Teresa and
George, of Ontario, Calif., left
June 29 following an eight-day
vacation in the Rogue valley.
In Gold Hill they visited his
mother, Mrs. Maybelle Rains,
and his grandmother, Mrs.
George Dorman. The Dotsons
established a camp at Union
Creek, coming to Gold Hill
every other day. Mrs. Rains
joined them every other night
at their campsite.
Other visitors of Mrs. Rains
were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Schatt
ler and children, Debbie and
Kenney of Pomona, Calif. The
Schattler family joined the
Dotsons for a day of fishing
at Union Creek before going
on to Olympia, Wash.
Also visiting a day with the
Dotsons at heir camp was Al
bert Gascon of Gold Hill.
Mrs. Melvin Burnette, chair
man of the child clinics for
the Gold Hill Health unit, said
that a well-baby conference is
scheduled Wednesday Aug. 6
between 9 a.m. and noon in
the health room at the Patrick
school in Gold Hill.
The well-baby clinic is for
youngsters four months old
through six years old, Mrs.
Burnette said.
Mrs. Lee Marsden Jr. and
son, Skip, and daughter, Bren
da Jo, left July 8 after a five
week visit in the home of her
parents,' Mr. and Mrs. Elmer-
Dungey of Sixth ave., Gold
Hill. Mrs. Marsden and her
youngsters will- join Mr.
Marsden in Tucson, Ariz.,
where they will make their
home. The Marsdens are for
merly of Milwaukie. He hai
been transferred to Arizona
from the Portland division of
Southern Pacific. He has been
promoted to assistant division
engineer for the Southern Pa
cific in Tucson.
While in southern Oregon,
Mrs. Marsden and children
also were guests in the home
of her husband's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Lee Farsden Sr., in
Gold Hill, and in the home of
her grandmother, Mrs. Eva
Wigle. In Medford shes visited
her brothers and sisters-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Lavern
Dungey and daughter, Kim
bra, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Dungey and . son, Scott, and
her sister, Miss Winona Dun
gey, also in Medford.

days where they were to be
guests in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. S. E. Edwards.

Court of Appeals
Upholds Conviction
New York (UPI) The U.
S. Court of Appeals Friday
unanimously upheld the es
pionage conviction of Col. Ru
dolph Ivanovich Abel, one of
the highest -ranking Soviet
spies ever -seized in this
country. , .
Abel, 55, was sentenced to
30 years in prison last Novem
ber, five months after his ar
rest in a Brooklyn studio
where he had masqueraded as
a photographer.
Abel was accused of being
the key figure in a Soviet es
pionage ring which allegedly
conspired to gather and trans
mit defense information to the
Soviet Union.

Police Hunt Robber
Portland (UPI) Police
carried on an intensive search
Saturday for the well-dressed
gunman who held up the Pa
cific First Federal Savings
and Loan association here
Friday afternoon and saun
tered out with a total of
$2,470, most of it in marked
bills.
The blue-suited bandit
walked up to the cage of Mrs.
Jenna Colgan at 2:30 p.m.
and showed a pistol which he
carried inside a black zipper
briefcase.
"This is it. Give me your
big bills," he ordered.
Mrs. Colgan handed him a
package of $10 bills, a pack
age of $20 bills, and single
$50 and $100 bills. He or
