when a little
ovum (egg) is
released from
a w o m a n's
ovary, do the!
the
secretions in
tubes on each side of the womb
and in the womb itself, con
tain glucose (grape sugar). As
a result of this finding, the
doctor worked out a test by
which a piece of paper which
is sensitive to glucose is held
against the cervix (mouth of
the womb) for five minutes.
If the paper turns green, the
woman is in a state in which
she could easily conceive. If
it remains rale yellow, or
turns very slightly green, the
woman is probably at the time
infertile.
Polio-Like Infections
Now that infantile paraly1
sis, due to the polio viruses,
is coming under control,
health authorities will be
spending much time studying
those viruse diseases that re
semble polio. For instance, last
summer, in Milwaukee, there
was an epidemic of fever,
which proved to be due to a
virus, called ECHO-9. There
were 213 patients hospital
ized with what looked like
non-paralytic polio. Dr. Al
bert B. Sabin, of Cincinnati,
who consulted with the Mil
waukee Health department,
was able in most cases to iso
late the ECHO virus from the
stools or the cerebro-spinal
fluid of the patients. Other
organisms found were one
strain of polio virus; five
strains of the so-called Cox
sackie virus, which can cause
a polio-like disease; and four
strains of other ECHO vir
uses. Rash in Children
Public health nurses then
visited 2,447 homes, where
11,403 persons lived, asking
about fevers that had come
during the epidemic. They
found such fevers in 62 homes,
and when virus cultures were
made from the patients, more
cases of ECHO-9 infection
were found. In most cases the
patient had a fever around
103 degrees, headache, nau
sea, vomiting, sore throat, and
pain in the neck or back. Chil
dren under the age of three
generally had a rash. Only six
patients had fairly extensive
symptoms of nervous involve
ments, such as unconscious
ness, jerky movements, and
fallopian i temporary paralysis. All these
symptoms were transitory and
cleared up completely. There
were no deaths. The illness
lasted on an average six days.
Usually the disease was
brought home by a pre-school
child who then gave it to the
rest of the family.
What this shows is that
health authorities constantly
have to be on the alert to
study epidemics of strange fe
vers which keep showing up.
What is good is that now, with
the new technics for the quick
identification of viruses, the
health officers can find out
what the cause of an epidemic
is.

will start taking claims under
the temporary unemployment
compensation program on
Monday, July 14, John A.
Norton, administrator' of the
Unemployment Compensation
commission, .has announced.
Unemployed Korean veter
ans and former federal em
ployees who have exhausted
their claims since June 30,
1957, are eligible provided
they have no benefits now
payable under, any other state
or federal law. Claims may
be filed on or after July 14
at any of the commission's 26
offices throughout the state.
"We don't foresee a heavy
increase in claims resulting
from the temporary unem
ployment compensation pro
gram," Norton said. "By the
very highest estimate there
are about 2,500 potential
claimants under the combin
ed federal and, veterans' pro
grams. -We know that many
of these same people have re
turned to work and that many
more will find jobs soon be
cause of relatively high em
ployment opportunity during
the summer months."
Demonstration Set
By YMCA Tiny Tots
A special tiny tot demon
stration and family swim for
the 9 and the 9:45 a.m. swim
classes Monday and Thursday
will be held at the Medford
YMCA at 7 pjn. Monday.
. The purpose of the demon
stration is to provide an op
portunity for all parents to
see what their children are
learning. Many parents can
not attend the regular morn
ing classes, but can attend the
evening demonstration. ,
There will be a special dem
onstration of different styles
of swimming by the swim
team, along with a diving ex
hibition. Sheila Spence and: Donald
Day, instructors for the class,
will be on hand to talk and
to meet the parents of the
children. All parents and
guests who are interested in
watching the children swim
are invited to the demonstration.

For Fires, Stand-By
Medford firemen Friday
morning were called to the
Hall Jinks residence, 726 Da
kota ave. When firemen ar
rived they found an over
heated refrigerator motor
causing considerable smoke.
The only damage was to the
motor, firemen reported.
Thursday afternoon firemen
were called to stand-by at
Medford airport, while a
Beechcraft Bonanza landed.
The pilot of -the craft indi
cated his landing gear had
failed. Firemen report that the
landing gear was lowered
manually and the plane land
ed safely. ,
A grass fire in the 1900
block of Orchard Home dr.
was reported to firemen at
4:51 p.m. Thursday. No dam
age was reported and the fire
was out onarrival, according
to firemen.'
