Life-Time Residents
Honored on
Cave Junction The golden
wedding anniversary of Mr.
and Mrs. Richard G. Sowell
was celebrated at a surprise
Ireceptign given by their five
; children at the Eagles hall in
Kerby Wednesday evening
July 9. About 85 attended.
The Sowells are life-time resi

well was born near the old
Waldo store in March of
1886, and his wife, the former
Ethel Holland was born in
April, 1889.
At that time, as well as at
the time of their elopement,
the three main towns in the
valley were Waldo, Holland
and Kerbyville. The thriving
city of Holland, larger then
than Cave Junction is today,
with its hotels, business
houses creamery and large
post office was named for
Mrs. Sowell's father.
On July 9, 1908, 19-year-old
Ethel Holland and 22-year-old
Dick Sowell, in a horse
drawn rubber-tired buggy, set
off for the five-hour trek into
Grants Pass, ostensibly to
visit friends." Instead, they
drove to the courthouse and
were married by Judge
Jewell. Their three-d a y

Six months after the couple
were married, they moved

Mr. Sowell was among the
first paid guides at the Oregon

which ran between Holland
and Grants Pass. For 10 years
he was with the Oregon Fire
patrol and forest service. He
has turned his hand at ranch

retired, the Sowells live in
the ranch house on the Tycer
property which stands on the
site of the old Fort Bragg.
Mr. Sowell remembers Fort
Bragg which was erected for
the protection of the early
settlers against Indian at

to be the center of the valley.
