Grounded After
' Two Explosions
Del Rio, Tex. (UPI) The
Air Force has grounded all of
its Lockheed U2 jets, used for
secret high altitude weather
information gathering, until
it determines why two of the
planes exploded within 24
hours this week.
Authorities indicated today
they had no idea when a 30
man investigating team would
conclude its probe of the
wreckage of the U2s, and two
F100D Super Sabres which
crashed within 100 miles in
sparsely populated Western
Texas and Eastern New
Mexico.
The pilot of each one-man
plane was killed.
Too Much Spaed Hinted
"If there was a survivor he
would be able to pinpoint the
entire situation," said Capt.
Lloyd Strot, public informa
tion officer at Laughlin Air
Force Base here, referring to
the U2 crashes.
Col. John Swafford of
Laughlin, who led the investi
gating team at the scene of
the second U2 crash 23 miles
from Tucumcari, N.M., said
the plane may have exploded
because the pilot went too
fast.
Swafford and other Air
Force officers said there was
no reason to suspect sabotage.
The U2s had been based at
Laughlin and the F100D jets
at Cannon AFB, Clovis, N.M.
The U2s, which Strot said
have been used to gather in
formation about cosmic rays
and other atmospheric ele
ments, were ordered grounded
by Brig. Gen. Austin D. Rus
sell, commander of the 4989th
Strategic Reconnaissance
Wing at Del Rio.

Ranch Land Burns
Pendleton (UPI) More
than 750 acres of ranch land
were seared Thursday by a
rash of range fires in an area
northwestof Pendleton.
One blaze driven by a brisk,
dry wind, whipped the flames
over some 500 acres of rich
farm land, including 350
acres of unharvested wheat
and barley.
The fire for a time threaten
ed the Gene Bissinger ranch
located about 20 miles north
west of Pendleton, but frantic
efforts by oome 75 men and
15 radio control trucks con
tained the blaze with shovels,
water and wet burlap sacks
Two fires in the Despain
Gulch area about 10 miles
northwest of Pendleton broke
out about 1 p.m., but were un
der control an hour later after
charring about 200 acres of
stubble and consuming anoth
er 60 acres of unharvested
wheat and barley.
More than 400 acres of un
harvested wheat and barley
were destroyed by the fires,
with an additional 350 acres
of barley stubble and range
land being burned, officials
said.
Approach of Death
Described in Letter

Death's stealthy approach was
recorded, today in a note
written by Donald Allen, 48-year-old
electronics engineer,
temporarily unemployed and
worried about finances and
his health.
Police said Allen took an
overdose of sleeping pills, sat
down in the den of his home
and began to write of his life
for his wife and his son and
then of his inability to go on.
Laboriously, he scrawled.
"It's just too much . - . I'm
getting sleepy. I . . ."
Then there was nothing.
His body was found by his
wife.
