An estimated $500 was
made from the YMCA spon
sored fireworks show on the
Fourth of July, a spokesman
said Thursday.
Total attendance for the
event was estimated at 2,000,
about 1,000 less than the num
ber estimated last year. The
money will be used for the
YMCA camp at Diamond
lake, it was reported.

DELINQUENT
One of the great problems
of humanity is, what td do
with the psychopathic delin
quents. They are people who
appartnely were born without
any conscience, or sense of
decency, or desire to live a
normal and useful life.
A good ex
ample is that
of the man in
Colorado who,
a few years
ago, in order
to get some
money for a
binge, insured
his mother's
j life and put

her on an aer
oplane with a time bomb that
killed her, and incidentally
took the lives of 43 other in
nocent persons.
A significant fact that, la
ter, when asked if he wasn't
sorry about the deaths of all
these people who had done
him no harm, he said "No;"
so far as he was concerned,
people were just like cattle,
and he had no interest in
them.
One reads that these delin
quents are born often into
good and . highly respectable
families. This is true; but cur
iously, in practically every
case I have studied, I have
found some skeleton in the
family closet: there were some
ancestors who were psychotic
or alcoholic or "not quite
right."
Dr. George N. Thompson,
an able psychiatrist, spent
many years studying these
people as they came into juv
enile court of Los Angeles. He
finally wrote an excellent
book on them in which he ad
mitted he had lost hope of ever
helping them. There just isn't
anythnig in them to build on.
There is no spark of decency
nothing to appeal to.
These people are often
bright and socially attractive
and even gifted. They can be
most ingratiating, and as a re
sult, often a well-to-do man
or woman will almost adopt
one of them to see if he can
not rehabilitate the fellow and
make a good man of him. But
always the do-gooder soon

Anyone who wants to get
a vivid idea of what these mis
chievous, amoral children with
a large body are like should
read Dr. Hervy Cleckley's
book, "The Mask of Sanity"
(Mosby). He described a lad
of this type who, while his
parents were out of town for a
few days, leased the family
home, furnished, for a large
sized sum of cash down, and
then went on a binge with the
money. The fact that in a few
days his kind parents would
return to face a most difficult
and unpleasant situation did
not worry him for a minute.
Usually, these persons are
so incapable of loving anyone
that their several marriages
do not affect their behavior
very much. They have no de
sire to settle down and become
established in business and
in the community. Because of
our silly legal definitions of
insanity these people cannot
be held in a mental hospital,
and because their misdemean
ors are usually . petty ones.

chopathic delinquent steals a
car he doesn't try -to take it
across a state line and sell it,
as a criminal would do; he
just drives around town aim
lessly until the police pick him
ud. When asked why he did
such a silly thing he says, just
like a child, "Because I want
ed to."
As I have said before, we
ouaht to have a colony some
where, perhaps on an island
where hundreds of these peo
ple could live. Then the worst
thing they could do would be
to Drev on one another. With
out alcohol to drink, or cars
to wreck, or money to steal,
many of them would be fairly
harmless.

A while ago I was reading
an article in the British Medi
cal Journal on what the aver
age general practitioner has
to do under the National
Health Service. The doctor
covers usually about 4 square
milps of territory, and during
a year drives his car about
14,000 miles,
nn the average, he sees 25
patients at each consulting ses
sion, and the average xime
for a patient is five minutes.

digestive disease, neuroses,
skin diseases, and diseases of
the heart and blood vessels.
Women complain most fre
quently of neuroses, varicose
veins, and rheumatic disor
ders. The commonest diseases
seen are high blood pressure,
pneumonia, peptic ulcer, so
called "chronic chests," and
tuberculosis.
