Holmes. 68, editor, publisher
and a pioneer in the develop
ment of aviation in the
United States, died here Mon
day. He founded the. aviation
magazine "Contact" in 1934,
and was its editor and publisher.

Firemen Called Out
Two Times Tuesday
Medford firemen responded
to two calls Tuesday evening
but were not required to ex
tinguish any fires.
At 8:31 p.m. a grass fire was
reported in a vacant lot in the
1000 block of N. Central ave.
Firemen said the fire, which
was out when they reached
the scene, was started by chil
dren with sparklers.
The second call sent a truck
to the Shell Oil Co. bulk plant
1002 S. Central ave. at 9:41
.m. as a precoutionary mea
sure. Firemen stood by while
leak in an ammonia pipe
line was repaired.
Officials reported also that
City Fire Marshal Truman Nel
son and a deputy state fire
marshal. William Roble. in
spected one ' domestic gas
storage and distribution plant
Tuesday: Seventeen changes
were ordered so that the plant
might meet state require
ments.

from a high ledge in the
Conejos canyon country west
of here Wednesday after a
j perilous climb and descent on
a 1,000 foot sheer cliff.

Rumor About Dogs
Don McNeil, manager of the
Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce, announced today
that a rumor that seeing eye
dogs may be obtained by sav
ing and redeeming red cello
phane tabs from cigarette
packages continues to be cir
culated throughout the coun-
Ujr.
"The fact is," McNeil said,
these famous guide dogs can
not be secured in this way, nor
for the collection of match
folder covers or any other arti
cle. Such collections can only
result in disappointment to
blind and their families who
save the articles."
George werntz Jr., vice
president of the seeing eye,
has advised the National Bet
ter Business bureau with
which the chamber is affili
ated, that the rumor persists
despite continuing efforts to
correct it, and is now spread
ing with alarming rapidity
throughout the country.
"Here "are the facts," Mr.
Werntz stated: "Any blind
person between the ages of 16
and 55 who wants a seeing
eye dog should communicate
directly with the Seeing Eye,
Morristown, N. J. His eligibi
lity will be established
promptly. No blind person
who is otherwise eligible, is
ever denied a seeing eye dog
for lack of funds."
Massachusetts enacted the
first, state compulsory school
attendance law in 1852 where
by children between 8 and 14
years of age were required
to attend school for 12 weeks
a year. "
