ment purchases set aside sole
ly for competitive awards to
small business concerns has
been registered by the Feder
al Small Business Administra
tion. V
The announcement revealed
that during the first eight
months of the 1958 fiscal year
contracts amounting to $537,
777,750 wer reserved for bids
by small business only. This is
22 per cent greater than the
comparable peri8d in 1957
when $440,044,562 had been
set aside.
The Clearing House said the

tion's most successful endeav
or was in its voluntary set
aside program which was
worked out in cooperation
with other governmental de
partments. Under this program pro
posed purchases are jointly re
viewed by SBA members and
officials of the agencies for
possible restriction bidding,
the announcement said.
Sex Hormone To
Make Cattle Fatter

Ohio agricultural research
scientists are using a new sex
hormone to make beef cattle
fatter faster.
The researchers reported
that when the male sex hor
mone, testosterone, is im
planted in beef cattle with a
female hormone, stilbestrol.
It results in a growth rate of
.27 pound per day.
The effect of stilbesterol on
growth has been known for
several years. Injettion is
made in pellet form behind
the animal's ear. The cost is
about 6 cents per head.
Use of the still compara
tively costly testosterone on
meat animals for human con-
sumption still must be ap
proved by the U.S. Food and
Drug administration.
Roseburg VA Hospital
