Ingrid Bergman
Granted Annulment;
State Plans Appeal
Rome (UPI) A Rome
civil court today granted an
nulment of Ingrid Bergman's
Mexican proxy marriage to
Roberto Rossellini but the
state was reported planning
to appeal the verdict.
This would mean an annul
ment could not become final
for at least a year.
Court President Mario Elia
signed the verdict granting
Italian film director Rosse
lini's request for a declara
tion that his marriage to Miss
Bergman was not valid.
Miss Bergman did not con
test the suit.
The court sent copies of the
verdict to the attorneys for
Rossellini and Miss Bergman
and to Public Prosecutor Dr.
Martino Ferrajolo.
Court sources quoted Ferra
jolo as saying he planned to
appeal the verdict within the
next two days'on grounds of
insufficient documentation.
An appeal would force a de
lay in Miss Bergman's plans
to marry Swedish impresario
Lars Schmidt. She announced
last week end in London that
she and Schmidt intended to
wed as .soon as she was free
to do so. ,

the guarded area for "highly
classified documents." None
would say what the docu

Denies Knowledge -
But it was learned that the
U2 itself is secret. Air Force

CANDLE ROOM
HOTEL MEDFORD
Her friends said she had
been looking forward to an
autumn wedding.
Tuesday, a report from
Bombay said Indian script
writer Sonali Das Gupta had
filed for divorce from her
husband. Hari.
Rossellini's name had been
linked romantically with So
nali before the break-up of his
marriage to Miss Bergman.
Legal Separation
Rossellini and ' Miss Berg
man got a legal separation
from a' Rome court last No
vember. They were married
in 1950, shortly after the birth
of their first child.
Rossellini had asked for the
annulment . on grounds Miss
Bergman's Mexican divorce
from her first husband, Swe
dish surgeon Peter Lindstrom,
was not valid under Swedish
law.
" As a result, Rossellini's at
torney, Angelo Currao, con
tended Rossellini's proxy mar
riage to' Miss Bergman May
24, 1950, in Juarez, Mexico,
was void.
Lindstrom later won a
Swedish - recognized divorce
from Miss Bergman in Los An
geles. He since has remarried.
the wreckage guard, denied
even that they knew there
was such a plane.
All four planes' crashed
within an area of 100 miles.
Both of the U2s were from
Laughlin AFB. The one man,
the pilot, in each plane was
killed.
The FlOODs crashed within
sight of. each other Tuesday
near Clovis, N. M. One U2 ex
ploded in the air near Way
side, Tex. The U2 which
crashed near Tucumcari also
exploded in air.
Tom and George Fish said
they heard a "loud explosion"
and, looking up, saw "burn
ing pieces of the airplanes"
drifting toward earth.
A New Mexico state police
man, who did not want to be
identified, said he thought
there was "something funny"
about the crashes and suggest
ed sabotage."
Thought Unlikely
Capt. Lloyd Strot, public in
formation officer at Laughlin
AFB, said the crashes, so close
together were . a coincidence
but he thought sabotage high
ly unlikely.
The U2s, it was learned,
were measuring radioactivity
in clouds at 55,000 feet. Strot
would not say how many U2
jets are based at Laughlin, but
it was understood that the
only other Air. Force base
with U2 jets is in Puerto Rico.
Pilots . of the planes were
identified as Alfred V. Chapin

Damage $50,000
Portland (UPI) Loss was
estimated at more than $50,
000 today from a spectacular
fire which damaged a lumber
yard, a market and a water
district office at West Slope
Wednesday night.
The flames sent towering
columns of smoke into the air
and attracted a large crowd
which created a traffic jam on
Southwest Canyon rd. The fire
was. fed by paint and paint
thinner.
The blaze was battled for
two hours by trucks from the
Beaverton-West Slope, Aloha
and Cedar Mills fire districts.
Officials of the water dis
trict said a rumor that dyna

save it. Firemen concentrated'
water on the building. They
said no dynamite caps or other
explosives were stored in the
building.
