Sumptuous Villa
Heston, who ypll' spend
eight months here starxtng in
the film, is one visitor to Italy
who doesn't follow the ad
monition, "when in Rome do
as the Romans do."
If he did, one might suspect
all Romans are millionaires.
The actor and his wife,
Lydia, live in a sumptuous
villa on the outskirts oi the
eity, attended by more serv
ants than the real Ben Hur
employed in his heyday.
'While Heston has no acad
emy awards to his credit,
someday his will be one of the
most familiar faces in history.
His first two biggies, "Ten
Commandments" and "The
Greatest Show on Earth" have
climbed high into the top ten
pictures of all time. "Ben
Hur" has ambitions for the
same lofty altitude.
"It's my face, I guess," Hes
ton laughed. "And the work
paya pretty well. If they want
me in costume pictures I'm
more than happy to oblige.'
Lehi IV Towed
Back to Harbor
Afier Breakdown
San Pedro. Calif. (UPI)
Skipper DeVere Baker, 42,
made repairs on the raft Lehi
IV today after failure of his
newest attempt to float across
the Pacific.
Baker, who has had three
other rafts which bobbled like
aimless corks in four attempts
at floating like Kon Tiki, esti
mated it would take another
four days to get. the 12-ton
raft off the beach.
The skipper and four-man
crew set out Saturday intend
ing to float to the Hawaiian
Islands by the Japanese cur
rent. Eight miles out came
one of the almost inevitable
accidents which have plagued
Baker's rafts.
Yacht Breaks Rope
The 28-by-18 foot raft, cost
ing an estimated $30,000 to
build, broke a double tow
rope and banged into the
yacht Crest which had been
towing it to Santa Catalina
Island, about 20 miles off the
Southern California coast.
Despite a hole above the
water line, the yacht attached
a ,new rope to the Lehi, re
fused Coast Guard assistance
and tugged the raft back to
Los Angeles Harbor where it
was tied up.
The Lehi s 20-foot square
sail, the raft's only means
of propulsion except for a j
dingy's outboard motor, was
damaged during the abortive
attempt to get underway.'
Now, Baker said, he plans
to tow the raft 150 miles out,
avoid Catalina and catch the
Japanese current.
If he makes it to the islands
Baker hopes to eventually
float from the Persian Gulf to
Central America. He believes
persons in the Middle East
made the trip on rafts in pre
historic days. '
