As many persons know, in
this country ragweed pollens
are the worst offenders in
producing hay hever. Perhaps
now, with the isolation of the
trifidin we can get better
drugs for hay fever.
Diet is of Lillle Value
In Treating Skin Diseases
In a recent number of the
Journal of the American
Medical Association, Dr. Al
lan L. Lorincz, an able skin
specialist of the University of
Chicago, reported studies
which showed that, contrary
to popular belief, food aller
gies do not play much part in
producing skin diseases not
even acne.
What is important in many
cases is trie over-eaung xnai
produces obesity. Fatness can
aggravate some skin diseases.
For years we have been told
that vitamin A is good for the
skin, but Dr. Lorincz could
not find any definite evidence
of this.
Two Different Types
Qf Diabetes
It has long been known
that diabetes can be produced
in a number of ways, but
now, as Dr. Henry Dolger, of
New York City, has just
pointed out, with the, coming
of Orinase, the drug that in
the case of older diabetics can
be taken by mouth, it seems
clear that there , are at least
two types of diabetes; one in
which the body makes no in
sulin, and the other in which
some insulin is made but is
not well used. Now that this
differnce has been demon
strated, our understanding of
the several types of diabetes
will probably be advanced.
The Great Fear Today
Of Radiation
I recently read that today
some persons have become so
alarmed over the recent scares
about radiation that they
won't let their dentist x-ray
their teeh. This seems to me
very foolish. I know hundreds
of elderly persons who have
been x-rayed dozens or scores
of times and they are in per
fect health. I have been ex
posed to x-rays off and on for
54 years. For 12 years I
have worked part of each day
as a roentgenologist, but so
far as I can see, I am no worse
for this. I have not been
scared by all the recent liter
ature. ,
All those persons who now
fear having their teeth x
rayed should be cheered by
the fact that recently a new
film has been made so fast
that the exposure time is now
much less than it used to be.
So I say here to all those who
now are fearful of x-rays (for
diagnosis) don't worry. An
exception must be made for
women in the first few months
of pregnancy their baby
might be injured by any

As I have said before in this
column, many persons are
constantly being worried by
the writings of men who fear
that the fall-out from atom
bombs will injure the chil
dren that are to be born in
the years to come. I wish such
worriers would read the book
by Drs. Neel and Shull, emi
nent geneticists of the Univer
sity of Michigan, who studied
in Japan all the children of
mothers who were exposed to
a tremendous amount of
radiation during the atom
bombing. The doctors failed
to find any more defective
children than one would ex
pect in any comparable popu
lation group.

"Premio Firenze" Internation
al award for the best new iris
for 1957, in competition in the
Florence, Italy, Concorso In
ternational Dell, Iris.
At the request of the Amer
ican Iris Society, Deforest had
sent rhizomes of two irises,
the Rehoboth which he de
veloped 10 years ago, and the
Tallchief, a red hybrid, to
Florence in 1955. Italian gar
deners planted them for the
1957 blossoming.
- Among awards he received
were a gold florin coined by
the Republic of Florence in
1827, an engrossed parchment
and an 11-inch silver plate of
Florentine design engraved
with the story of the award.
San Francisco's 10 major
museums had .more than 3,
000,000 visitors last year.
