Extension Examinations Are
Kot Alway Needed
I have said it here before
but I'll say it again. It dis
tresses me to see so many pa
tients demand
ing that they
be put through
a complete
and' thorough
and expensive
e x a mination,
when what is
wrong with
them is ob
vious at a
glance. What
in. llvuu
i sad is that so many laymen
have gotten the idea that in
some magic way, a complete
examination will produce the
key to the cure, perhaps of a
disease that several able phy
sicians have said is beyond
the reach of science.
All the patients do, then, is
to waste a lot of money which
many can ill afford to throw
away. For instance here comes
an unhappy mother carrying
in her arms a typical mongo
loid baby with obviously a
very low intelligence. The
mother has been told by sever
al able specialists that there
is no cure for the condition,
but she doubts if they exam
ined the child carefully
enough. Actually, they did
not have to examine it at all;
with one glance they could
see all they needed to know.
Disease Known at Glance
Or, here comes an elderly
man, with a dull poker face
and a shaking hand. He is bent
forward a bit at the waist and
.the neck; he shoves his feet
along with little steps, and he
keeps his hands near his
groins.. He wants a very thor
ough examination, but I learn
that he has recently had sev
eral good examinations by
able neurogolists, so why
make another? I know perfect
ly well from one glance that
he has Parkinsons s disease,
due probably to a series of
"little strokes."
Or, here comes an elderly
man with his mouth bigger
on one side than the other.
He is leaning on a cane, and
he is shoving his stiff right leg
forward, scuffing it on the i
floor. His right hand is bent;
Presiden. Answers
Khrushchev Leiler
Washington (UPI) Presi
dent Eisenhower told Soviet
Premier Nikita Khrushchev
Wednesday that the Kremlin
is "casting doubt" on its inten
sions toward a summit con
ference by making unaccept
able demands.
The President said in a new
letter to Khrushchev that Rus
sian diplomatic maneuvering
"has disrupted" discussions in
Moscow aimed at, carefully
preparing for a top level meet
ing which would be profitable.
Eisenhower flatly denied a
Khrushchev charge that the
United States is trying to
sabotage a summit meeting.
He said the U. S. and its
British and French allies will
not relax their efforts to find
solutions to major East-West
cold war problems despite the
Soviet "arbitrary action."
HIP -POCKET John Fox,
publisher of the defunct
Boston Post, told House in
fluence investigators that
his Democratic newspaper
was driven out of business
by forces high in the Repub
lican Administration which
he linked to Bernard Gold
fine. In the past, Fox has
charged that Goldfine had
Sherman Adams "in his hip
pocket." Woif s TV I Radio Service

So why should I take the poor
girl's money?
I just cannot bear to do it,
even though I know that she
has so set her heart on this
that if I don't make the ex
amination, she is likely to go
elsewhere for it. She may
even conclude that I am a
poor excuse for a doctor. How
often, nowadays, I wish peo

questions!
