Strawberry Birth Marks
Drs. Thomas S. Walsh Jr.,
and Victor Tompkins recently
prepared an article on straw
berry birth marks for Modern
Medicine, a journal I help
edit. They say that the straw
berry mark usually appears
shortly after birth. It grows
for a few months, and then
shrinks in size. Usually there
is a single artery that sup
plies blood to the birth mark
The authors advise that birth
marks over the head and
neck," shoulder, genitals, the
palm of the hand next to the
thumb, and the ankle should
be treated right way.. Birth
marks in other places can be
left alone ,to get smaller by
themselves later.
The authors feel that the
simplest treatment consists of
two applications of dry ice,
each lasting three seconds. A
longer application is inadvis
able because it can produce
ulceration ad scarring. Large
birth marks sometimes have
to be treated with what is
called a sclerosing agent,
which is injected into the
artery supplying the patch.
Occasionally, it is advisable
to tie off the artery 4hat sup
plies the strawberry mark.
Saving Life of Frail Infants
Recently Dr. William G
Hardy, director of the Johns
Hopkins' Hospital Hearing
and Speech Center, called at
tention to the occasional un
fortunate result of keeping
alive an infant born so frail
that in the past it would have
succumbed. Before or during
birth some of these infants
have suffered so much injury
to the brain that now they
have great difficulty in talk
ing. They can repeat words,
but they cannot store up in
formation, and hence they
canot learn to talk properly
More and more in the fu
ture we physicians will have

Shaking Method
Tried on Cherries
Bailey, Mich. (UPI)
The laborious task of cherry
picking may give way to a
time-saving tree-shaking tech
nique.
Michigan State University
horticulturists plan further
experiments this summer into
harvesting cherries by shak
ing.
MSU horticulturists describ
ed the basic equipment of the
shaking process as a cloth
covered catching frame 20 by
30 feet wheeled under the
trees which are then shaken
with long hooked poles.
This season the researchers
hope to develop a tractor-operated
shaking device to re
place the poles used last sum
mer.
Most of the cherries fall
directly into the net and een-
ferally are not as bruised as
is hand-picked fruit. Only a
small percentage of cherries
which strike limbs during
their fall are bruised.
The nets are sloped so the
fruit rolls gently together and
then is poured into lugs
through a special vent.

How Shoulder Patch
Troy, N.Y. (UPI) Mem
bers of the Troy Police De
partment have added some
thing new to their uniforms.
Designed by a member of
the force, William J. Canaval
ly, it is a shoulder patch
showing a red map of New
York state against a black
background and topped by a
red, white and "blue Uncle
Sam's hat with a white beard
flowing from beneath it.
A gold star flanks each side
of the hat, and the whole
badge . is edged with Navy
blue piping. The patch, worn
on the left sieve, also glitters
with "City of Troy" in gold
letters across the top of the
map and "Police Department"
at the bottom.
Champagne Caves
Fifth Attraction
Paris (UPI) The cham
pagne caves of Reims and
Epernay now rank fifth
anong the many attractions
that draw tourists to France.
The Tourist Office here said
the famed cellars, in which
millions of bottles of cham
pagne nurture their sparkle,
drew 480,000 visitors in 1957.
This was only 150,000 less
than visited the art museum
of the Louvre, and far more
thn climbed the Arch of Tri
umph. The biggest attraction
was the Eiffel Tower, fol
lowed by the palace of Ver
sailles, the ariport at Orly and
then the Louvre.
