ors say that
o s teoarthritis
usually affects
some of the joints such as
those of the spine, hips, and
knees which bear the body's
greatest weight Naturally,
then, when the person is too
stout, he can help himself by
getting rid of the excess
weight. The application of
heat and the taking of drugs
can give temporary relief
from pain. The patient also
may have to undertake special
exercises.
If these are to help, they
must be carried out faithfully
every day. As the authors say,
there is no drug that will
cure tne osteoarthritis. As
pirin or sodium salicylate will
help to relieve pain and stiff
ness. Codeine, phenylbuta
zone, or a new derivative of
phenylbuatzone, c o r t i sone,
and some of the new cortisone-like
drugs will some
times help much.
Since the disease is due to
a wearing-out or degeneration
or pounding-over of the ends
of the bones that make up a
joint, we cannot expect any
treatment to give perfect re
sults. As I sometimes say to a
patient when I see in .his x
ray films the outlines of a
badly injured joint, I wish I
could send to a factory some
where and get him a new one
Fortunately, o s t e o a rthritis
does not turn into the severe
form of joint disease rheu
matoid arthritis. Usually it
just remains as a more or
less painful nuisance one of
the handicaps that come to
the person who is growing old
New Hip Joint
A few persons can be op
erated on with the hope that
the surgeon can remove some
of the deposits of lime in the
painful joint. Also, a new hip-
joint made of plastic or metal
can be put in, but the sur
geon cannot guaranatee that
the pain will be helped and
the lameness cured. Perhaps
with time, the technic will be
much improved.
Sometimes a patient with
bad knees can be helped by
wearing braces. Also, at times,
an injection of hydrocortisone
into the painful joint will
work a temporary miracle.
Contrary to popular belief,
there is no specific diet for
arthritis; certainly the experts
on arthritis do not know of
any diet that will help con
sistently if given to 100 pa
tients. The fact that one per
son has gotten well after fol
lowing 'a diet for a year or
two certainly does not prove
that the diet worked a cure.

and then gotten well and I
had not attempted any treat
ment of any kind!
Local Man Buried
in Roseburg Slide
Roseburg A Medford man
employed on a Roseburg con
struction job escaped serious
injury Thursday morning
when he was completely bur
ned under a slide of moist
soil for five minutes.
Blaine Biles, Medford, was
working in a 15-foot sewer
ditch when the accident oc
curred. He was freed .by Job
Foreman Rex Case and Work
man Joe Abel, taken to Doug
las Community hospital for
examination, and was back
on the job within an hour.
Biles, 43, placed his helmet
over his face before he be
came covered with several
inches of earth. The cave-in
occurred at a Salem Sand and
Gravel company project in
West Roseburg where the
firm is installing sewage dis
posal lines.
Case said Biles was lying
at a 45-degree angle under
the loose soil. Earth being
piled at the side of the ditch
by a steam shovel caused the
minor avalanche, it was re
ported.

the state which received an
award of merit for achieving
perfect safety record during
1957, State Highway Engineer
W. C. Williams has announced.
The Prospect crew operated
