St. Johnsbury, Vt. (UPI)
A $10 insurance premium pay
ment lost in the mail has
bspught $1,185 to a blind
woman.
Mrs. Blanche Chickering
posted her payment but it
never reached the insurance
office. While investigating the
case, the insurance company
discovered a blindness clause
in Mrs. Chickering's policy.
The company paid her SI,
185 retroactive five years
when her eyesight first
reached the stipulated 80 per
cent impairment.

I Am Sorry I Can't Answer
Urgent Questions
Scores of people write ur
gently asking me to give in
this column an immediate
answer to
some ques
tion. For in
stance, many
women say,
"I am sched
uled to have a
hyster ectomy
next week
and before
then will you

column a note to tell me
whether or not to have the
operation." One Monday a
cute letter came from a young
lady in Brazil who said she
was to be married on Satur
day night, but she wouldn't
go to the altar until she
heard from me and got my
approval! I got the letter
three weeks later, when all I
could do was to hope that the
lady was married and very
happy.
I hate to dissappoint these
people, but I simply cannot
get information to them im
mediately. Their letters usual
ly are sent to their local news
papers and must be forwarded j
to me. By the time the letter
reaches my office I may be
away lecturing or attending
meetings in New York or San
Francisco. Finally, I rarely
try to answer individual ques
tions in the column. All this,
I hope, will explain to many
a person why I failed to
answer his air - mail special
delivery letter.
Royal Jelly Is Of
Questionable Value
According to a long article
in that most informative
weekly, Science News Letter,
the U. S. Federal Trade Com
mission is looking into the ad
vertising of the royal jelly
that bees use in making a
queen. An "official of the Com
mission said that they have
received many complaints
from people who felt that
they had gotten no good from
taking many doses of the
much - touted jelly. Doctors
questioned by the Commis
sion had not seen any mar
velous effects that could be
ascribed to the substance.
They had not been able to
prove it to be of value either
as a food, a tonic, or a beau
tifier. As the official said, the
stuff may be wonderful for a
bee, but, as yet, he knew of
no good proof that it is good
for men and women.

George Layman To
Seek Speaker Post
Newberg (UPI) State
Rep. George Layman, New
berg Republican, has stated
that he would be a can
didate for speaker of the Ore
gon House of Representatives
in 1959, provided he is reelect
ed in November and the Re
publicans regain control of
the lower House.
Layman, now serving his
third term, is one of only five
Republicans in the House
who, if reelected, would have
served consecutively for the
last three terms.
Layman said he would not
solicit pledges in advance of
the November elections. He
said members and candidates
for speaker avoid embarrass
ing situations if definite com
mitments are reserved until
the membership of the 1959
session is determined. 1

the Young Mens Christian
association youth council, will
be held Saturday at 8:20 p.m.
at the YMCA.

direction of Howard Lage.
