Resignation of
Adams Favored
By Sen. Knowland
Washington (UPD Sen
ate Republican Leader Wil
liam F. Knowland said to
day that Presidential Aide
Sherman Adams could "best
serve". President Eisenhower
and the Republican party by
resigning.
Knowland added, however,
that he did not believe the
Adams case would "material
ly" hurt him in his campaign
for governor t)f California.
"They're not going to hold
me personally responsible for
Adams' decision or the Presi
dent's decision," the Cali
fornia Republican said.Q
Usefulness Damaged
Knowland previously had
made clear that he felt
Adams' usefulness had been
badly damaged by House
committee disclosures that
the presidential assisfent re
ceived gifts from Bernard
Goldfine, a Boston business
man in trouble with govern
ment agencies.
At a news conference to
day, his 50th birthday. Know
land said, "I believe he
(Adams) could best serve the
cause of the President and
the party by submitting his
resignation."
Knowland also said he ex
pects to confer at Sacramento
Friday with Gov. Goodwin
J. Knight, Republican nom
inee for Knowland's Senate
seat in the election next No
vember. To Run Own Campaign
Knight, who dissents from
Knowland's endorsement of a
state right to work law, has
indicated that he intends to
run his own independent
campaign.
"I've made my position
clear," Knowland said. "Im
certainly going to do every
thing possible to bring about
unity in the party."
He said it was too early to
predict what the state GOP
convention would includein
the party platform on the
right to work issue. Cali
fornians will vote in Novem
ber on a proposal for a state,
law outlawing union contracts
requiring union membership
to hold a job.
Air Crash Victim
In Good Condition
John Day (UPI) Mrs. Pa--tricia
Davis of Fresno. Calif..
who is still hospitalized here
as a result of plane crash in
juries suffered AP"1 21, was
reported in good condition to
day following more surgery
earlier this week.
Mrs. Davis, whose courage
in the face of repeated opera
tions has attracted wide ad
miration, suffered badly froz
en feet when a small plane
piloted by her husband crash
ed in the mountains near Day-
ville, Ore. She lay at the
wreckage several days before
she was rescued.
Mrs. Davis is now in a body
rast while skin from her left
leg is grafted to her right foot.
The left foot was amputated

the right foot. Mrs. Davis will
require still further amputa
tion on her left leg so she can
he fitted with an artificial
limb, according to Dr. Jerry
van der Vlugt at the medical
center here.
The physician reported his
patient is in good spirits and
progressing well. Her hus
band leader Bruce Davis,
visits her frequently but is
now back at his job in Cali
fornia.
