Negro Doctor's
Home Vandalism
Arouses Sympathy
Long Beach, Calif. (UPI)
Offers of help and friend
ship from as far as Washing
ton, D. C, and Louisiana
served as encouragement to
day for a Negro family whose
$45,000 home in an exclusive
residential district was dam
aged by vandals.
"Quite a few neighbors have
come over and expressed sym
pathy about the damage," said
Mrs. Charles T. Terry, wife
of a Negro physician.
Regret Expressed
She said telegrams and tel
ephone calls had come from
as far as the Nation's capital
from persons expressing re
gret over the attack.
Dr. Terry was preparing to
move his wife and family into
the redecorated home on Mon
day when he discovered the
week end work of the van
dals. He found they had ripped
carpeting, splashed bleach on
wall-to-wall rugs and flooded
the house with a garden hose.
Total damage W-as estimated
at between $10,000 and $15,
000. Determined to Move
Although he received a
thiatening letter, Dr. Terry,
a veteran of both World War
II (fid Korea, expressed de
termination to move into his
home as soon as repairs are
completed. He blamed "one
or two intolerant persons" for
the attack.
Terry's neighbors expressed
regret and disgust at the at-,
tack at a meeting to form an
association to "protect prop
erty values" in the area by
passing on "qualifications" of
Q persons wishing to buy in the
section.
Interior decorator Frank
Dailey said he didn't think the
association wanted the Negro
family but added he was cer
tain "they don't approve of
such tactics."

Radio Broadcast
Panics Citizens
Lisbon (UPI) A Lisbon
radio station Wednesday night
broadcast a dramatization of a
Martian invasion of the world
which sent residents of this
Portuguese capital into a
frenzy.
A similar broadcast by Or
son Welles in the United States
in the late ,1930s caused wide
spread panic.
Police stations In Lisbon
were jammed with calls ask
ing if it were true that Mar
tians had landed at Carcave-
los, a residential area on the
Estorial coastline 10 miles
from the capital.
There even were calls to
priests to come and hear last
confessions.
Police sped two jeeps to the
radio station and ordered the
program halted. The Portu
guese television network and
other radio stations calmed
the panic with broadcasts that
denied there was an invasion
from Mars. It was only a play,
the broadcasts said.
