A woman writes asking if

help her to help her husband
who is an alcoholic. Yes; a
while ago I read an excellent
book by James L. Free, called

Dr. Aivarex alcoholics can
get help
A troubled mother writes,
much worried about the pos
sibility that her grown daugh
ter may have inherited a ten
dency to alcoholism from her
father who was an alcoholic
and a gambler. The mother
says the girl is very much
like her father physically and
temperamentally, but I doubt
if this alone will make her
outlook for the future bad. I
have no way of knowing if
the man's alcoholism was
"linked" to his appearance.
It probably was linked to his
temperament.
Fortunately, so far, the girl
shows only disgust for alco
hol; she is a good worker; she
is sensible and, unlike her
father, chooses good friends.
I imagine this young woman's
chances for avoiding alcohol
ism are very good. I think her
chances of avoiding psychoses
and neuroses are good. We
can only hope that, if she mar
ries and has children, they,
will be all right. Certainly, if
she marries, she will do well
to choose a husband who
comes of an eminently sane
and sober family. Why? Be
cause if she were to marry
the son of an alcoholic, and
she and her husband were
each to give their children
some defective genes, several
of these children might be
very unfortunate. It is this
doubling-up of poor genes of
the same or similar type that
geneticists worry about.

Duvall. A while ago in this
column I commented favor
ably on her book, "The Facts
of Life and Love." Now. I

a girl handle the situation
when her date misbehaves
and begins to get out of hand?
How should young people re
gard a sexual life before mar
riage? What is best to do
about this, and what are the
dangers?
As I read this book I was
much impressed by the great
wisdom that is expressed on
every page. Dr. Duvall has
the great gift of talking to
youngsters in a sensible way
without being prissy or goody
goody or stuffy. I think she
has much the idea that, I
used to have when my child
ren were teen-agers and some
question came up as to wheth
er they should take the car,
or should go on a week-end
trip. Often I was puzzled as
to what would be the best
thing tjp do, and I would ad
mit this freely to the child. I
would say to him or her,
"How . I wish I knew what
was the wisest . and best or
safest thing for you. If I only
